this article in ron whites newsletter which i read on a weekly basis, contained this great article. It is so profoundly true and because of this I believe i should share it with you, Enjoy

1. I Am a Salesman by Ron White

Do I see myself as a speaker? Nope. Author? Try again. Memory expert? No. World record breaker? Nah. Entrepreneur? Closer, but not exactly. Instructor? Getting colder. Motivator? Wrong. Salesman? BINGO!!

I am a salesman and very proud of that! This is how I see myself, and the question is, Why don't more see themselves as salespeople?

What about the talented musician who has the voice of an angel and can play piano better than Liberace but does not think that he is a salesman? I will tell you what—he will have to rely on getting lucky in a big break or hunt for a promoter. Or maybe the dentist who has opened up his shop and waits for the customers to walk through the door. Most people will invest all their assets in marketing before they invest one hour in cold calls, yet cold calls are where it all starts.

First of all, you must get the belief through your head that we are all salespeople. Whether you think that you are or not—you are! If you participate in capitalism, you better see yourself as a salesperson or be dependent upon others for your success.

Next, abandon the idea that being a salesperson is below your dignity. Do you know what is really below your dignity? Not fulfilling your potential because you didn't want to “lower” yourself to being a salesperson.

Realize that sales all begins with a cold call. Cold calling is not so bad. It is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and at the very least open the prospect’s mind to your idea. After you do this for a few weeks, a ratio will emerge and you will begin to see how many cold calls it takes to get a sale. This is when it becomes fun and you work to improve your ratio. Make it a game!

Understand that the difference between making a living and making a fortune in sales starts with networking referrals. Brian Tracy tells us that the average person has a sphere of influence (people they see at PTA meetings, neighbors, family, friends, etc.) of 260 people. If you don't ask for referrals, you won't get them.

Close the sale! The salesperson who has a great presentation but can't close is a conversationalist and conversationalists don't get paid very well. At the end of your presentation give them an alternate choice close—“Would you like blue or red?” That is a nonthreatening close. Or simply ask, “Why don't you give it a try?”

Finally, remember that when people are sold to by a professional, they enjoy it! I once spoke at a real estate office in San Antonio. The sales manager stood up when I finished and said, “Wow! I don't think anyone who was trying to sell us something has made us feel so good in the process!” I yelled from the back of the room, “I am a salesman!” He enjoyed being sold and so did his group because it was professional. When done right, the sales process should be fun!

If you are, do yourself a huge favor and begin to see yourself as a salesperson! Making cold calls is not below your dignity. Not fulfilling your potential is what is below your dignity.

one person whose newsletter and e mail updates i recieve is from craig garber a top copy writnig expert. last week he sent out a simple and highly effective method for writing headlines.
and today I am going to share that with you,

"I love writing headlines. In fact, my obsession with it
might border on the ridiculous.

For example, sometimes I'll be driving in the car and I'll
see a truck pull up beside me with some kind of an ad
plastered across the side of it... or I'll see a billboard
advertising something, and I'll just automatically start
thinking of better ways of advertising the product or
service.

Yes, that's a bit strange, but I guess it beats nightly
drinking or beating my kids or something else like that,
right?

And there's one, very simple headline system anyone can use
to make dramatic improvements to their headlines. It's
called the SPA-S system and I'm going to show it to you
today.

Let's start out with a simple headline like, "How To
Eliminate Headaches"

First thing you so in this SPA-S system, is look to make
your headline more Specific. Like this:

How To Eliminate Migrane Headaches

The more specific your target, the more responsive your
buyer.

Then you try and Personalize the headline. Like this:

How Any Woman Can Eliminate Migrane Headaches

The more personal appeal your headline has, the more
responsive your buyer.

Lastly, you then say to yourself, "Self, is there any way I
can Acclerate this claim I am making?"

And you can always do that, like this, for instance:

How Any Woman Can Eliminate Migrane Headaches In 15 Minutes
Or Less

Obviously, accelerated claims will generate a greater
appeal, right?

Of course they will.

So far, you have Specific, Personalize, Accelerate.

Then, there's the final "S" which might shake you up a bit,
because it asks you to think outside your comfort zone, and
beyond this simple system.

The last "S" says, "Can you make this simpler?"

And in many cases, you can. Like this:

Women: No More Headaches -- GUARANTEED

Sometimes simpler is better, and so your first 'split-test'
would be the final SPA headline, tested against your simple
headline.

And then your body copy can start with something like...

"There is now a way any woman can completely eliminate
headaches and pains associated with monthly bloating, in
less than 15 minutes... blah blah blah"

This is a VERY easy system I developed, and I teach it to
all my consulting clients who have copywriting problems they
ask me to help them solve.

If you can't follow this, or if it seems too difficult, then
I suggest you take up a new career working for the
government. You will fit in perfectly and probably get
promoted to the top, very rapidly :-)

today i would like to share with you a quote that i recently read and made me realise the simple steps to success have been around us for a long time and history provides us with footprints to achieve our hearts desire.

So here goes .....

" A couple of hundred of years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that till tomorrow, he said which you can do today.

This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if i had to guess,I'd have to say it has a lot to do with fear.

Fear of failure,fear of rejection,sometimes the fear is just of making a decision,because what if you're wrong ? What if you're making a mistake you can't undo ?

The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can't pretend we have'nt been told. we've all heard the proverbs, heard the philosphers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted time, heard the damn poets urging us to seize the day.

Still sometimes we have to see for ourselves. We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's posssibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin really meant.

Lets just sit right down and think about that statement for one moment. Its true the sun rises everyday and should we comtemplate at the end of the day our actions throughout, we will find that one moment.

There will have come across our path, a conversation, a phonecall, e mail, tweet or article that had you acted on it your day and life would have been happier.

How many times when reading the rags to riches stories of people who achieved massive success, do we find that they were on the verge of quitting, when something occured to turn things around.

One order came in that saved them from going under. A conversation at a function or social event led them to the person who provided the funding for them to carry on. An event they did'nt want to go to, but because they had nothing to lose they went.

There they heard something which flipped the switch in their mind , cleared the fog of uncertainity and boom everything just took off.

Most of us survive on eight hours of sleep, leaving sixteen hours where that one moment can come along. Because when we are prepared to recieve that one unknown, that causes the chain reaction of rags to riches, each and everyday becomes easier.

It starts with having an open mind, one willing to recieve. So the question for you is, are you willing to change everything that makes you unhappy ? Or are you quite comfortable wallowing in self pity and woe is me. Your heart knows that there have been things which could have rapidly changed your life, but you were not open to recieve them.

Believe everyday that st some stage a moment will come along that will and can change your life and your family's fortunes forever. Are you big enough to recieve it. One moment, one tenth of a second to win gold or recieve bronze. One moment to foot on the gas pedal and speed away to succes or slam on the brakes of fear. One moment to say yes or procrastinate your family to a life of almost.

Quick question. What actions yesterday have led you to have a successful day today ? Because todays decisions and actions will create a successful or unsuccessful tomorrow.

Its now the time of year when the clocks go back and nightime creeps in earlier and earlier. For a lot of people it becomes quite easy to say " its cold and dark outside, not going to that meeting. You know the fire is more welcoming than doing that presentation, sure i can cancel and re-schedule ".

Because with that kind of attitude the majority of your days will be unsuccessful. Every action is either efficent or inefficent and the more efficent actions you accomplish the more successful days you will achieve.

Already we have talked about having the right attitude, consistent learning,trustworthy,integrity, doing the right things over and over and never givng up.

Because what ties all these together is something money and a college degree cannot buy or teach you and that is approaching your business and customers with a true servants heart.

In these fast living and ever changing times in my own city business after business have come and gone. Look around am pretty certain it is the same in your environment. Look around again and notice the ones that are still standing, the ones that seem like they have been there since the year dot.

What is it that they have done differently than others. How come they are still standing and thriving. Ask yourself why do you, your family and friends keep going back and supporting these business's. Because when you look deep down you will find that they serve others.

It is truly a quality that money cannot buy. A little something you can't quite put your finger on. As the french say they have that little " je ne sais que ". Something that is unique to them ad not others who have tried to enter the same field.

Is it something you can acquire for your own business, Absolutely. All you gotta do is adopt and practice doing business with a servants heart. Easy ? No: Benefical - Without a shadow of a doubt !

Take one more look around your community, identify the ones that have been going a long time. Because when you look beneath the surface you will find that behind them has been someone who had

Today we will talk about O in A.C.T.I.O.N.S. and how O = Over and Over.

That's right over and over,each and every day you gotta have the right attitude. You gotta be constantly self developing and putting into each action the currency of integrity..

You cant do these things some days,cos if you look at your diary,there ain't no day called someday in there. Monday thru till Sunday each and every week and with every person you interact with, family or business associates, your actions must be with the right attidude. You must set aside time for self development and act with total integrity.

Because it can't be a case of, OH this person is important,better act the right way to impress them. The only person you have to impress is YOU. When you decide to impress yourself each and evey day with the right attitude, learning and coming from the tower of power of integrity, you can't help but be that way with everybody you meet.

Sad to say I have come across people all over the world, who only act in the right way when they feel it will bendfit them or gain them kudos. Because when the spotlight is off the negative nasty know-it-all quickly resurfaces. Out goes the sharp attitude and in comes the sharp pracitices.

Down goes the book and on goes the hella-vision with constant negative news. Out the window flies integrity and in comes lies and untruths. Now I believe that ain't you.

You know and have come to the realisation that A.C.T.I.O.N.S. each day with the right attitude, self learning and integrity will bring you untold and unheard of rewards. Your business and your life will be a joy and people will want to associate with you, because everyday Over and Over you are a person who has

A.C.T.I.O.N.S. Part 4

Today I = Integrity

Integrity is defined in the dictionary as " the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards ".

We will stick with professional standards in this article and leave the morals to a higher authority.

" steadfastly adhering to " meaning if you advertise or have any guarantees in your sales literature, that you stick to them. You do not try and weasel your way out. What you say is what you do. You say your lines are open 8am till 8pm, then they are open till 8pm. On your voicemail you say you will return calls within 24-36 hrs, do so. Integrity, your price is your price and your word is your word.

So many out there today say they are full of integrity and use it in their sales bumpf, when in reality they are full of hot air and change direction as the wind changes. Policies and guarantees are something they suck their finger on and put it up to sky and go " yup it be blowing this way today so lets up the price". Do not play around with your integrity as it value can be priceless.

A currency is something that can be traded and its value is recognised. Like the dollar V's yen. The greenback over the years has become a global currency. Imagine that the integrity part of your business is percieved as a high value currency. Something that could be the integrity standard, the benchmark for others to follow.

Something that others when in conversation go " i'm buying " or " I'm joining,partnering up with ......." cos they have an integrity currency that is superior to any other on the market today. For your Integrity currency to be valued and regarded as priceless, standards have to be set.

Yes high professional standards have to be set by you, followed by you and adhered to by you. Because if you do not follow the standards of integrity set by you, then no-one else will either. Then your integrity currency becomes just like a dot com stock in the old days. Rising up first on hype and crashing down to earth just like the dot com stocks, when people realised there was nothing to sustain them, they were in truth, worthless. Worthless from day one when all is said and done.

Is that how you want the integrity currency in your business valued. No, did not think so, then raise your standards, follow your standards and adhere to them steadfastly.

Earn the right for your integrity currency to be viewed as the global standard, the one all other integrity currencies have to be valued against.

A.C.T.I.O.N.S. Part 3

T = Trustworthy

Trustworthy is defined in the dictionary as " deserving trust or able to be trusted ". Lets dig a little deeper and define the two words that make up trustworthy.

Trust = "Confidence in and reliance on good qualities especially fairness,truth,honour"

Worthy = fully deserving - usually as a suitable reward for merit or importance.

Amongst your associates and customers,suppliers and family would'nt you love to be known as trustworthy. Imagine this, everybody who comes into contact with you on the business field and social arena has no hesitation as recomending you as a trustworthy person.

What a difference to your business when people point you out as been a leading light and shining example when it comes to truth,fairness and honour in your dealngs with others. Forget about your competion and others who use shady deals to get ahead. Instead create around you, your business and brand the aura of Trustworthy. In this day and age with sharp practices on wall street and main street and people been so so afraid of been conned and ripped off, why not be different and stand head and shoulders above the scurrying rats.

Its simple, treat everyone fairly and tell the truth about what you can do. Honour your word. Dare you even imagine how acting on these three simple things can turn you into a person known as trustworthy.

Someone people can rely on. The majority of people want to give their money to people who they know will treat them fairly,truthfully and honourably. Think back to a business deal you concluded with someone you thought you trusted. You agreed a price, yet when the bill arrived there were so many extra charges, even one for taking your call. Did you feel you were treated fairly. They promised their product or service was going to revolutionize your business but all it caused was an uprising in your business and with your family.

They promised delivery on a certain date and it never came. The backup did not exist. The warranty was not worth the paper it was printed on. Honour their word was a piece of folklore to them. Think back now, could you in all truthfullness put your hand on your heart and recomend that person/business as Trustworthy. Nah instead you told as many people as possible that if they come a calling and a courting, run a country mile in the opposite direction.

I believe you do not want that said about you. You desire that brand of Trustworthy around you and your business, because my friend its easy to achieve

Treat all with Fairness
Tell the Truth at all Times
Be a person of Honour

This creates the brand known and cherished as
TRUSTWORTHY

We all have gaps in our skill sets we need to improve upon and the only person going to do that is you. Ain't no tooth fairy gonna grant you a wish,wave the magic wand and boom you are a guru.

Ain't gonna happen. You gotta aim to read at least one book per month. Some of you might cringe at that but its the truth and key to growing your skill sets. Ask yourself what area do I need to improve and develop a list of books to read to enable that skillset to become rock solid inside of you.

It could be closing,presenting,handling objections,time management or habits you need to improve or you will never move forward. And what a shame that would be to yourself,your dreams and your family. You start your journey to success and get so far and realise to carry on to the end you gonna need to improve and gain some skillsets. But you figure you are doing ok and is it worth the time and effort.

You will be left behind. Your neighbour, the one you assisted to start their journey is overtaking you, they keep going from success to success and you are stood still in the middle of the road with your eyes bulging out just like the coyote when the road runner speeds past. Beep Beep ...

The only difference between the two of you is that one stopped and the other carried on constantly self - developing and improving their skill sets. They read the books and bought and watched the dvd's. One watched the latest series of Hero's and the other became a hero to his family.

But over and beyond that, they attended events. Taking down notes and putting into practice what they learned. This leads us to the often unspoken part of self - development. You can read the books and watch the dvd's and go to events till you have enough air miles to go to mars and back, but if you do not take notes and put into practice what you have learned, you might as well have gone salmon fishing in the sahara desert.

A book must be read at least seven times for you to gleam all its magic. Each time you read it use a different colored highlighter to highlight the words,phrases and lines that resonate with you. Dvd's and cd's you must watch and listen to at least twenty one times with pen and paper by your side, before the full value of what you are hearing and seeing sinks into your subconcious mind and works its way out through your words and actions.

Attend as many events as possible. The ones directly related to your business. Even attend ones outside your field. The keys to unlock your success or not always with the local locksmith.

A.C.T.I.O.N.S [Part 1 ]

A short while ago I called into a couple of business associates who trade side by side. Conversation got round to what actions had worked and failed in 2009 and what actions would be taken in 2010 to enable continued success.

Right there in that conversation was the seed for this writing A.C.T.I.O.N.S. For the next seven postings each letter of the word will be broken down to assist you to success in your business. Today A = Attitude

The dictionary defines attitude as " an opinion or general feeling to something ". Let's get straight to the heart of the matter. What is your attitude to your business,customers and team/employees. The old saying still rings true "treat your business like a hobby and it will pay you like a hobby,treat it like a business and it will pay you like a business ."

There ain't no fuzziness here, how you treat your business ? Do you get up each day with the attitude that this is gonna be a great business day or just shrug your shoulders with a kinda ho hum attitude. Only you know the answer.

This leads directly into how you treat your customers. Believe me they know your attitude to them. Is your attitude one of gratitude, cos without customers you ain't got no business. Do they know how much you value them or can they see your attitude is one of indifference. You can't hide your attitude to them, they know and when they don't feel the love, you are not gonna recieve as much folding stuff as you desire.

Running from these two is your attitude to your team/employees. Each and every day you go to work your attitude towords it rubs off on your team. Your attitude to your customers rubs off on your team too. Ever walked into a premesis and the staff could'nt care less whether you purchased from them or ever came back again.

Guess where they get that attitude from ? YOU. Yes thats right you. You and you alone set the standards in attitude to your business and customers.This then seeps it way into the mindset of your team and should it not be right . . ..... .

So stand up,take a step back and be big and brave enough to ask yourself this question
" How is my ATTITUDE affecting my chances of Success "

Who's Got Faith In You

A couple of weeks ago while rising early to head out to appointment,I happened to catch a couple of minutes of an early morning business show on the radio. A comment was made which made me stop in my tracks. They were talking about UK government bonds and how the market and investors were deserting, as they had no more faith in them.

Imagine a big seemingly solid country and investors had no faith in their bonds. It got me a thinking about the independents and home based business owners and raised the question in my mind " who's got faith in you ?

The dictionary defines faith as " belief in,devotion to or trust in somebody or something". So as a business owner could you stand back and look objectivly and state without doubt, my customers can have faith in me and trust my business to deliver on its promises.

Big question and only you know the answer. Let's dig a little deeper. When you set an appointment, do you show up on time. This is the first test of you and your business from your customers view. Sale agreed,does the price stay the same or you add on items you never told the customer about. Being transparent here sets up a trust foundation.

Delivery of product or service. Are you delivering when you said you would or are you extending delivery time and making excuses.These three steps in building that trust foundation in you from the customers view and will determine whether the recommend you and refer you on to others.

After sales/customer service. How easy is it for you customers to contact you, phone/cell,e-mail,website. Your response time from queries from existing and potential customers is the next is the next layer in building the trust foundation and faith in your business. Think back to a conversation you had with friends and family and how they were rubbishing a particular business,because they could not speak to anyone or get their calls returned. They were annoyed,disappointed,angry and swore black and blue,they would never use that company again and were recomemding you stay away from them and the whole world should too.

Remember how passionate they were,simply because they felt they were neglected. Their steadfast belief that you and everyone else should not do business was so strong, you believed it to be true.

Think hard, are you giving people a reason to say anything like that about you and your business. How would you feel if people had no faith in you,your business product or service. Am pretty certain that is not in your plans for your business. Doing four things right lays the foundation of faith and trust in your business.

1/ Be on time 2/ Price agreed is price charged 3/Deliver when you say you are gonna deliver 4/ Be contactable and never neglect your customers

How much more successful would your business be, when people were devoted to it and had 1000% faith in you. By these four cornerstones will you know the answer to

Diligence = Leisure

Recently while listening to an audio version of an article Benjamin Franklin wrote back in the mid 1700's, the line " Leisure will be attained by diligence " was seared onto my brain.

Mr. Franklin wrote a classic when he joined those words together and today we are gonna break it down for those of us striving to achieve financial success. Like me I'm pretty sure you know a few people who keep telling you,that once their number comes in on the lotto, thats it,retirement here they come and welcome to the world of leisure. And in the meantime the ain't doing nothing to build that legacy that will give them the leisure they desire.

True leisure comes when you have grown a business that works with or without you. It ain't easy to achieve, because a lot of tmes we have erased the word Diligent from our vocabulary. Be diligent in all that you do. Simples really. How much more of an effort does it take to do something right as wrong. It boils down to a few fundementals. Are you diligent in your timekeeping ?. Have you taken the time to learn your presentation from A to Z . Have you been diligent in the words you use when describing your business.

Have you been diligent in encouraging your team. How diligent have you been in learning the sales techniques to grow your business ? . Have you built a mastermind team with the same diligence as you pick your lotto numbers ? . And the branding of you, how diligent have you been there. Is it a brand that screams honour and integrity or a mish mash of conflicting messages.

Because when you are diligent in your efforts leisure will be yours to enjoy. The dictionary defines leisure as " Time during which somebody has no obligations or work responsibilities and therefore is free to engage in enjoyable activities ".

Imagine taking that extra time to pursue diligence in your work and all the rewards that will come with it. Having earned your rewards you now have the time to engage in your favourite things without the worry of work or its responsibilities and obligations.

Like me, you will know people who are constantly behind in their jobs or meeting customer deadlines and never seem to have the time to enjoy time out and engage in something called Leisure. Maybe just maybe, had they taken the time to listen to or read the wisdom of Ben Franklin and realised that been diligent and taking the time to do things right,then they would be enjoying quality leisure time with their partners,family,friends and engaging in activities which will bring a smile to their face, as opposed to ulcers and headaches.

Focus Forward Forever

Last week as I listend to a teaching from my mentor John di Lemme,he said the words " focus forward forever" in relataion to achieving your goals dreams and aspirations. Combine these words with another saying that I have come across in variations by john himself,jim rohn,bob proctor,brian tracy,mark victor hansen and others " Don't start tomorrow until you finish today ", meaning at the end of the day sit down and write out clearly what you aim to achieve the next day upon arising.

Too often we jump way ahead of ourselves and forget to finish what we have started today. Its so important to focus on today first by asking yourself " have I achieved today what I focused on achieving ". When you have answered that question you start moving forward to focus on what you need to achieve tomorrow,that will move you forward to your ultimate goal,Freedom.

Before you retire for the day take the time to sit down and write out the six things in order of priority, you need to achieve the next day. By doing this you will be able to get up and start your day in a focused manner.Not like those,who wake up and have a good scratch around their brain and wonder what are they going to do today. Because they did not take the time or effort to finish the day,tomorrow for them is unfocused and full of guesswork.

Guesswork is what you did at school when you did not study for that days exam. Think back to those schooldays,how well did you do when you were prepared and focused instead of just guessing. Your business is kinda like studying for an exam,the more prepared and focused you are, the higher the grades you achieve.

To attain success in your business you must be focused forward forever. Its like a prize fighter who keeps moving forward a little bit at a time. You look at them and think to yourself,they ain't doing much. Yet by the end they have won on points or by a TKO. They were focused on finishing each round before they moved on to the next one. Exactly like you sitting down at the end of the day and focusing on what you need to achieve tomorrow. You wake up ready to go. Your day is mapped out and you are a focus forward forever machine with nothing getting in your way.

So quick question. Hand on heart,can you say that you are focused forward forever or is your day filled with guesswork. Until you decide to focus you day is gonna be filled with hits and misses and lots of guesswork. Now I ain't no Sherlock Holmes,but even he had to take the time to focus so that he could move forward and solve the mystery. Because like Holmes and the great prize fighters,they won,because they focused on finishing today before moving forward forever in a focused manner.

What's Your Strategy

Strategy can be defined as " A systematic plan of action for obtaining a goal or result "

So the question for you is what is your strategy or what is your specific strategy to achieve your goal or result. Are you going around doing different things on different days with no particular reason for doing them. Attending one seminar per week or just as the mood takes you.

You must have a plan, a system that is going to take you from where you are now to where you want to be. Is your plan to converse with three different people per day,then stick to it. Don't do it somedays and not others. Look at your diary and see can you find "someday" in there. You will find monday,tuesday,wedensday,thursday,friday,saturday and sunday. Someday ain't there because it does not exist. And your systematic plan of action cannot contain the words " Someday ", it simply does not exist.

Should you believe that building a list of thousands is your road to financial freedom, fantastic. So what is your specific plan to get your magic numbers. Once achieved what is your system for contacting your list and building up relationships. What is your plan of action to make a difference to each and every person on your list.

Are you gonna e-mail once a day, week,month. Are you gonna start with special offers. How are you gonna manage your list,by geography,people who have purchased,age,gender. Quickly what is your systematic plan of action for this list you have just built ?

We all have at some stage heard the old adage " fail to plan,plan to fail ". Because putting a systematic plan of action in place is one of the best things you can do to achieve your goals. Write it down, read it out loud each day so that your inner ear ( your heart ) can hear it and act upon it. Please don't leave it to chance, be particular and specific with your plan. Doing so will allow you to reach your goal and achieve your results faster than a speeding bullet.

Excuses

I got to hold my hand up here and truthfully say that from time to time I am guilty of falling back into the excuse default programme,when building my business.

Its something I truly have to work hard on to overcome and move forward on the days when the excuse bug hits. " will do that in five minutes","might not be a good time to call","gotta check my e-mails before I do the next thing"," weather is bad out,don't think there will be many at event,will go to next one".

If you are human like me,from time to time you will make excuses like this and allow yourself to go off track. So what can you do to get back on track to success. Am gonna share some of the daily habits I focus on to overcome the excuse hump when it appears on the horizon.

Firstly by staying committed to the 1/96 of a day habit,to invest time in personal development. 1/96 of a day is only 15 minutes. That is all 15 minutes and by sticking to this habit am able to proudly hold my hand up and say that each day I now invest two hours of laser focused time in self development,that is almost 10% of a day,because the investment is worth it.

Secondly,I never watch or listen to the news. Never allow yourself to fall into the trap 97% of the population do by allowing themselves to be surrounded by constant negative and fearful messages. This only fuels the excuse habit and will seriously de-rail your efforts to be positive,enthusiastic and retain a 1000% commitment level to your business and its success.

Thirdly, stay away from negative gossiping people. They will suck the good things from your mind and plant seeds of fear,negativity and doubt.If you allow them near your most prized pocession, your mind, they will destroy the harvest of success you have been cultivating. This is probably the hardest habit to achieve,because most of the negative people in your life comes from your circle of family and friends. You will still love them, but do not let them enter your dreams,hopes,desires and ambitions for your future. You kinda got to be like the kings and princes of the middle ages and build a moat around your dreams. The only people you will let the drawbridge down for,is those who share in your dreams,hopes,desires and ambitions,people like you. People who have bought into your dreams and who you will assist to achieve their dreams. These are the people who will never allow you to use excuses,because they are there to encourage you not to steal from your dreaams.

Some of these habits I achieved easily and some took a little longer to take root. Believe you can overcome the excuse bug and put these three daily habits into your arsenal to demolish all the negative nasty messengers you will meet on your journey.

These three simple habits could be the difference in securing your financial future for you and your family.

The 3 P's to Success part 2

On novenber 7th I flew to London to attend a super saturday seminar with my mentor John di lemme. It was a fantastic day of learning and mingling with like minded individuals. One line struck me on the day and stayed with me afterwards;
"Preparation Predicts Prosperity" John di Lemme

Lets take a look at each word:
Preparation is defined in the dictionary as "the work or planning involved in making somebody ready"

Predicts "to say what is going to happen in the future often on the basis of present indications or past experiences" its latin root means "to say in advance"

Prosperity "the condition of enjoying great wealth,success or good fortune"

You have started your own home based business and are ready to commence the journey to prosperity. Because it is a journey and like any journey you need to prepare for it. What preparations are you making to ensure your prosperity. Are you laying the foundation in personal/self development. Because the number one person you have to believe in is yourself.

Are you preparing how you are going to market you and your business. Are you prepared enough to know how much sales is required each month and day to ensure your success. What about learning the language of sales. Have you prepared your sales presentation,your product demonstration and are you prepared to handle the objections.

Have you prepared you and your business to be known as one of integrity. Are you learning how to plan your day to become scheduled,so that you never let anyone down. Are you on the net, how have you prepared for your online presence. Haphazardly or with skill and finese. These are just some of the things that are part of the preparation process.

Because what you are doing in the preparation stage i.e[present indications] is going to predict your future outcome,failure or prosperity. Take a look back over the preparation section,which ones are you doing and which ones have you left behind.Which ones are you doing well and what ones need fine tuning. All should be done everyday not somedays. Hand on your heart, is what you are doing today going to predict the future you are dreaming of for you and your family. By having the courage to look inside your heart you will answer this question truthfully.

Preparation predicts, are the two steps leading up to prosperity. A place where you can enjoy great wealth,success and good fortune. Prosperity does not happen by chance,you have to be prepared for prosperity. If you do not take the time and effort to prepare for prosperity,the universal laws of success, sowing and reaping will go again you. Oftentimes opportunities will present themselves to people,but because they have not prepared it passes them by like a ship slowly going beyond the horizon of your eyeline. Those who are prepared and have invested time in this area can grab the opportunities as soon as they appear. They are ready and prepared,fear is not going to stifle them,procrastination will not be a chain around their dreams. They are ready with both hands outstretched to gather into their hearts and lives the opportunity which they have prepared for.

You, how will you answer when opportunity comes a calling. Will you be able to stand up and shout out loud

Passing Over Opportunities Repeatedly

Am not talking about those one's in your inbox telling you that you can earn $100,000 in seven days. Simply the opportunities that occur daily and we pass them up.

Bet some days you are sitting in your construction zone [office] wondering how you can meet more potential customers. You have just read your local paper and said " oh that event/seminar looks interesting". Did you make that call or e-mail to reserve your seat ? No, what an opportunity you have just passed up.

A business associate of yours bumps into you in the high street and invites you to go for a coffee. You look at your watch,hmmm and hawww, dither and dance and say no. What an opportunity to sit down and talk with a business owner. Who knows what that conversation could have led to.

A neighbour in your area invites you to a spots event. He/she works at a big multi-national, lots of serious business heads gonna be there. You decline, saying you prefer to watch on TV. What a golden opportunity you have just passed up,to get know your neighbour better and make some new friends. You have heard the old saying, " your best friend at one stage was a total stranger" until one of you reached out your hand,introduced yourself and atarted a conversation.

Someone you know or maybe even a customer of yours says " I was telling my cousin about you and your business,he would love to speak with you,here's their number". Because in the past some of this persons refferals were of a dubious nature,you never make that call. Three months later you are at a company event and you are introduced to the new rising star. Guess what its your friends/customer cousin you never called. Another opportunity you passed over.

Now I ain't saying there is a halo over my head. Like you in the past I have been guilty of all the above and afterwards have sometimes sat and wondered,what did I miss. Having learned from the mistakes of the past, I now look upon each of these opportunities as a seed. A seed that when planted and nourished can grow into one of the most beautiful things you ever dreamed of.

From this day forward promise yourself that you will never be P.O.O.R. again and that passing over opportunities repeatedly only leads to a barren wasteland and I believe you do not want your business to be located in the wasteland of opportunities.

There are two reasons why people buy your product or service or join your business. 1. the problem it solves 2. the difference it makes in their lives/business. Today we will focus on the problems you solve.

So now think about your business,product or service and ask yourself what problems does it solve. Here's some, bet your doing this already without realising;

If people are looking to earn extra income, can you solve that problem. Are they looking to spend more time with their family, can you solve it. They want to pay off their mortage real quick, can you assist them to reach a solution to their problem.

They want to donate more to their favourite charity/organisation, can you assist them to solve this problem. Someone wants to become an affilliate marketing champion, can you fix it,solve it and resolve it ? They have a desite to generate extra income on the internet, have you got the solution to their problem. Someone you just spoke to wants to be the number one sales person in the organisation, can you assist them to solve this problem. Your neighbour wants to quit his rat race job in five years and live by the beach with constant sunshine, can you solve their problem ? Can you ?

It's kinda like the old story about the guy looking to buy a drill. He is not interested if your drill was made in America,China or Timbucktu. He does not care what color it is. And certainly does not care if NASA have used it in space.

The problem he is looking to solve is he wants to drill holes. If you can show him how easy and simple it is to make holes of all differnt sizes and types with your drill, he will buy.

So the next time you are talking about your business,product or service, listen very carefully to the other person and see if you can hear the problem they are looking to solve. If you can solve their problem you will earn and earn HUGE

During the past couple of weeks there has been a lot of spammers on twitter saying they have the vehicle for you to be successful, saying "I have the one and you are a fool not to follow me etc,"

Listen / Silent

This post concerns one of the keys required to grow your business and it is called Active Listening. As my mentor John di Lemme says " if you take the word listen and re-arrange the letters you get the word Silent.

So last week I bumped into a business owner I know socially through other business associates. A pleasent person with a great laugh, although not on my mastermind team, a nice person to have a conversation with .... or so I thought.

There we were stood on the city street having a general conversation, when all of a sudden he says " hey Colin what do you think of this situation ". He proceeds to relate his story and then asks " so what would you do ". Replied " well from the brief overview you have shared, I believe you should investigate two things, one been ....

Before the first point was completed he had interjected with " yea yea, this is what i did, brillant heh, my guys are lucky to have me and my ability to solve problems etc ... Conversation ended, we shook hands and went our seperate ways. A couple of yards down the street, I stood still and shook my head in silence. That person did not want my thoughts or ideas, their ego was dying to scream out, look at me and how brilliant a person I am.

Have you ever felt honoured to be asked a question and sad to find out the other person just wanted to exercise their jaw. Now think back to times where you have been showing your business, porduct or service to someone who had shown an interest.

Its going great you asking and answering questions, then BAAM, the ego jumps in. You have just asked a question and the person is responding, BAAM you interupt. Cos you gotta show how much you know, how great your expertise is and you are brilliant in your field. And then wonder why you did not get the sale and open up a long term business realionship with that person.

Now I sincerely hope this is not you. If you have some of these symptoms, its not too late to learn the skill of Active Listening. Silence and listening shows respect for the other person. It shows you value their words and ideas. It shows you as a polite person, gracious with the time you share with others. If you don't listen and keep jumping in with your size 13's, what is that really saying about you and your business and how you will treat people after they become a customer ? What seeds of doubt are you sowing in peoples minds.

Listen / Silent is a key that can be turned easily, you just gonna have to learn the art of Active Listening. Learn this art, learn to love the silence, listen with your heart and you will see the difference.

Whats You Feeding Your Mind

Since way back when I fist heard Aesop's fables, have loved the way that fables/parables can teach us an important lessons about life and ourselves. Because this post was inspired by this Cherokee fable let me share it,

A Cherokee grandfather is teaching his grandson about life,
" a fight is going on inside of me " he said to the boy
" it is a terrible fight between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger,envy,sorrow,regret,greed,arrogance,self-pity,resentment,inferiority,lies,false pride and ego.

The other is good - he is joy,peace,love,hope,serenity,humility,kindness,benevolence,empathy,genoosity,truth,compassion and faith. This fight is going on inside of you - and every other person too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then he asked his grandfather
" Which one will win "
His grandfather replied
" The One You Feed "

Imagine living a life feeding the first wolf, all the time angry, full of regrets, envious and greedy. How many people do you believe would be inspired to join you or your business. How many people do you believe would be willing to engage in business with you. Prehaps a few and they certainly would not remain once the real you became obvious.

Now imagine living a life whereby you are constantly feeding the good wolf. You are kind to one and all and you go about your business with humility. You are generous and share your time and knowledge with others. You are known as a truth teller and a giver of hope. What type of people would you attract to your business leading this life. Would you be someone people would be quite happy to share time with. Do you believe people would have no hesitation in recomending you as someone to do business with. Would you be seen as reliable and a person of honour.

We all have these two wolves inside of us and we all have the choice of which one we decide to feed. Because Decisions + Action = Results

Real Success

" Real success is the success you share ". I wrote this down a couple of weeks ago. It was a heading for a financial services ad in the FT. It grabbed my attention so I wrote it down in my blog themes file. It goes to the theme of this blog and the thinking of Jim Rohn, that sharing with others is a key to your growth and success.

Because if you think about it, do you really share your success with others in your team or mastermind group. If you have just run an ad campaign which produced outstanding results, do you hog that knowledge for yourself or do you share it with your team so they can gain success. Because when they gain you gain.

Have you shared with your team the 60 second ad you use that attracts people to know more about your business. This 60 second ad has increased the amount of people you are presenting your business opportunity to, so why not share it. Let me share mine, when someone asks me " what do you do " I reply

" I am in the process of enabling seven people just like you to build a wall of financial security around themselves and their families, what do you do "

How about your success library, have you shared with your team whats in there ? Have you shared which one's enabled you to flick the switch from almost going under to breaking records. Your mentors and the people you go to for guidance have you shared them with your team or group.

It is not about keeping it all for yourself. By doing that nobody wins. You may look good and gain some accolades, but is that building long term. You gotta share what is working for you with your team, so that they can grow. When they grow you grow. When their business grows your business grows.

So the next time something produces results and success for you, remember ...

Insurance for Your Dreams

Last weekend watching the september video from my mentor John di lemme, about 14/15 mins into the teaching he says the line " we have insurance for everything except our dreams ". What a fantastic and true statement. Stop and think about it for a second.

Because we do have insurance for everything. Our homes,our cars,ourselves, our health, our death, our pets, our travels, our cell phones, our morgtage, our home contents, storm damage and even income protection insurance. What insurance do you have for your dreams. Do you have Dream protection insurance. Do you insure against dream stealers and negative people.

Have you got your mastermind team in place ? Are you insured for lack of focus and concentration. Do you invest 10% of your day [2.4 hrs] into personal development. Have you stopped listening to the constant negative news. Stopped reading the newspapers with all the doom and gloom ?

So what books are you reading to grow, not only you but your business. What are you listening to, so you can laser focus in on your dreams ? What habits are destroying your dreams, which ones are you changing and which ones are you gaing to insure against the failure of your dreams?

Have you got the A B E habit ............ Always be Early
Are you dressing for success
Got total belief in your product, service or business vehicle
Are you never never ever pre-judging anyone
Got the art of active listening

These are some of the components required to insure your dreams. They ain't no company you can go to and get Dream's Insurance Protection. The only person that can insure your dreams is you. Imagine waking up tomorrow and asking yourself ...

Doing Is Remembering

On one of my favourite site this week I came across a quote from Confucius, which reminded me that its about the actions we take each day, that will determine our progress,
" I hear I forget, I see I learn, I do I remember "

If you want to master your sales presentation you must role play each and every day, until you are able to present it at the drop of a hat. It is by taking the action of doing that you will remember its mechanics from start to finish. Not by listeneing to your business partner alone, but by watching and doing.

Its kinda like that old saying Look and Learn, which is true but if you truly desire to be able to do something yourself, you must do it, so that you remember how its done.

How do you expect to be able to deliver your elevator pitch each time someones asks you " What do you do ", if you don't take the action of doing it. Because not taking the time to role play and speak out loud your words, most likely you will forget them or worse, stumble on the words as you attempt to present yourself. It does not take long, just devote 15 minutes a day, it equates to 1/96 of a day. To go from hearing and forgetting to doing and remembering ain't a big chunck out of your day in the big scheme of things.

All the great people in sports and business who crossed that bridge from been one of the crowd to crossing the devide and becoming elevated, respected and admired took ownership of one simple thing. They knew that to go from forgetting, to learning to remembering took action. Because the action of doing it is the masterkey that unlocks all others, enabling you to remember. Once you remember how to do it, you can do it again and again and again.

If Tiger Woods did not take the action of hitting the ball for hours on the practice ground, would he remember how to strike the ball cleanly when competetion time comes around. Or Michael Jordan did'nt take the action of practicing foul shots, how would he remember when it came time for him to step up to the line and score the victorious hoop.

Imagine if Thomas Edison, did not keep on doing and taking action with the lightbulb and gave up on attempt 25 would he have remembered what worked and did not work. Would we have GE. Even the Beatles early on in their career had to go to Hamburg in Germany, playing three times a day, seven days a week, so they could remember how to do it at any given time it was required. Look at the muscical legacy they left us, that is still cherished to this very day.

Because if you desire to leave a legacy for your children and grandchildren, its one simple action of doing it, that will enable you to remember how to do it, time and time again.

For you legacy to last and be remembered Just Do It,

Because Patience Is The Game

In the bank last week , waiting in a busy line to go to the foreign exchange counter, something occured that set the brain ablaze. The person at the FX counter was slow and had'nt filled out the forms correctly, causing delay to others. Some people started shuffling their feet, others making noises and some tried to push the line closer to the Fx counter. What none of them had was patience.

Smiling to myself, I said the words " patience is the game ". Patience is described in the dictionary as " the ability to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties, without getting annoyed,complaining or losing one's temper ".

Because in business there will be difficulties, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. How we handle these difficulties determines the end result of winning or losing. If you start flying off the handle everytime a tiny bump appears on your journey, ain't no good. You get agitated, you lose focus and those around you start projecting these mannerisms onto your customers.

Result been your business starts to lose focus, forgetting and neglecting the most important person in the success chain, the customer.

You decide to run an ad campign for 11 weeks to gain some traction in your niche market. Results are slow and not what you hoped. You start panicking, making headless chicken decisions, changing the ad, threathing to pull the ad and complaining to the vendor. Again your business loses focus. You make decisions, but your staff start rolling their eyes and giving each other a knowing look, " all change in a couple of weeks".

When you make a decision you must have the patience to stick with it. If you decide to do something for six months cos you believe the end result will be spectactular, please have the patience to stick with your decision. Resist the temptation to tinker,get agitated and complain. Instead learn to persevere calmly with focus.

As my mentor John di Lemme says " the 3 P's is the difference between winning and losing" You must be,
Positively Persistently Patient
Because once you understand that Patience is the name of the game, it become easier.

During the week articles about nickel and diming by big corporations meant this weeks post was gonna be about short-termism and its effect on customer loyalty.

So whilst participating in one of the forums i frequent, someone had posted a video of Earl Nightingale's The Strangest Secret. As i had'nt heard this in ages, youtube was searched for Mr.Nightingale.

Imagine my surprise when his tv appearence discussing the boss popped up in a two part video. After watching, listening and taking notes from this fantastic teaching, it struck me,this is better than anything I could write.

You In The Arena

Quick question, are you in the business arena or sitting on the side watching others build their business ?

The dictionary defines Arena as " a place or situation where there is conflict or intense activity ". In your business arena is there activity. You building your relationships with your existing customers, opening up new relationships with others. Building your brand, marketing your expertise and growing your sales and improving your margins.

This is the normal day to day activity that occurs in the arena of business. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi " if winning does'nt matter, why do they keep score ". Are you winning the battle, cos it is a battle, competing for customers in your niche market area.

Because the scores that matter are increased sales and improved margins. What activity are you doing right now, which will improve the results that will allow you to post your scores up in flashing neon lights across the jumbo screen of your Arena. The scores/results you get will determine whether you stay in the minor leauge or progress to the majors. Your fans are your customers. So are you a well supported team or one on the outer fringes that is just starting to get recognition. Because if so, its way better than been one in decline, with people walking away in droves.

Or are you one of those part-time players, who dabbles a little,then goes take a rest. Sitting on the sidelines of the arena, watching all the activity, thrust and counter thrust and still says " naw still tired,just a little more rest ".

If so, the ones involved in the activity you see in the business arena, whilst you sit and laze on the sidelines will be the ones that progress through to the majors. You will arouse from your slumber and wonder how the hell did jonnie/macy move up the table, edging closer to that great leap from the minors to the majors.

Don't become a Rip Van Winkle, stay awake,alive and alert in the business arena. Jump in and get involved, increase your activity. There may be conflicts, certainly battles, but its better to be involved in the arena, rather than lazing on the sidelines. May your success be seen in your scores.

What Is Wealth

Read this line in a book about the history of Wall Street,it sums up wealth in a concise way.
" Wealth is the vessel of freedom and security; it's accumulation is a perpetual tutorial in self-mastery"

The key 5 words been Perpetual, Tutorial, In, Self- Mastery. All about learning the skills and mindset that will enable you to accumulate the wealth so that you can enjoy the freedom and security it brings.

I have always liked this quote from my mentor John di Lemme " The more you Learn the more you Earn ". Are you willing to devote 10% of your day to self - mastery/development. Setting aside two plus hours a day out of the twenty four we are given, to learn a new skill, improve your mindset and believe in yourself and your success.

Identify the area you need to learn more about. Sales, prospecting, marketing, sales copy, web pages, capture pages, article writing . . .
Whatever area it is you need to build up and accumulate the tutorials, do so. Don't procrastinate and become delayed, search for someone who has been successful in your area of lack and learn. Because if you don't learn, you won't earn. You may be saying " yeah yeah I know that".

Fine but are you learning and tutoring yourself in the skillsets you need to master. Two hours a day is all that is required. Think back to your daily routine. Where can you find 15 minute blocks of time to read that book, listen to that mp3, watch that dvd, read that article and practice that one skillset required to take you to the next level.

If you cannot find eight 15 minute blocks of time to accumulate the knowledge that leads to self mastery, which leads to wealth and the freedom and security that you will inherit ?

Begs the question, freedom and security, do you truly have a burning desire to attain it. It all come down to five words

Persevere To Achieve

Recently looking at a new stone statue sculpture in the city centre, it reminded me of the stonecutter and what they must persevere to mould the stone into this thing of beauty.

As the stonecutter hammers away, it is not the first blow that breaks off a piece of stone, but possibly the one hundreth blow or even blow one hundred and two. Then you realise that it was not blow one hundred and two that broke the piece but rather the culmination of all the blows that preceeded it.

As you are building your home based business in direct sales, mlm or on the internet,are you prepared to persist over a long period of time, even through difficluties to achieve your masterpiece.

Would we have the wonderful pieces from MichaelAngelo or Leonardo da Vinci if they had just quit after the first couple of blows of the hammer and chisel ? No ! because they knew to achieve a masterpiece and success, it was going to take many blows to achieve the desired result.

When out prospecting do you give up after the first six people have said no or are you willing to persevere to achieve. You are starting to build your list on the internet, its slow and you are making mistakes. Do you give up or learn from your mistakes and surge forward to building the list that is you and your familes superhighway to financial freedom.

Direct sales can be cruel, if you are not willing to take the time to learn, role play and learn the closing strategies of the successful sales people. No one starts out perfect in direct sales. Skills have to be learned, old habits pushed aside and new ones learnt. It's all a process of chipping away at what is not working and replacing it with time proven strategies, leading you to achieve your success.

The next time you feel lost and unsure of where you are heading in your business, think of great sculptures and how many blows of the hammer and chisel it took to create them and say to yourself each and everyday
" I Will Persevere To Achieve "

Gofer V's Go-Getter

Recently while looking up a word in the dictionary, I came across those two words almost side by side. Am currently reading " The E Myth revisited " by Michael E. Gerber and one of the central themes of the book is working on your business rather than working in it.

So those two words almost side by side hit me like a ton of bricks as a good topic to write about.

Gofer is described in the dictionary as " somebody who runs errands " and Go-Getter is described as " somebody who is enterprising and forceful ".

Let's explore the word Gofer. Are you of the type who makes sure you have plenty of ink cartridges for your printer. Constantly checking you have paper,pens, folders etc.. Diligently passing on all memos from HQ to your team, even though they proably recieve them already.

Forwarding on e-mails, searching the net for articles about your company and product. Just generally running a lot of little errands around and in the business, without producing Results.

Or are you the Go-Getter type, enterprising and forceful in your thinking. Asking yourself and prodding yourself forward with questions about the quality of your list and how to improve it. Analysing your prospecting methods and their effectivness. Looking at your sales and how to improve them. Asking how good is my closing ratio. What's your plan for today,tomorrow and next week for growing your business.

Investing in self development to improve on the skills required to truly have a successful business. Out networking, having conversations and building relationships. Growing your team of business partners.

These two sets of thinking are what seperates the Gofer from the Go-Getter.

Never Pre - Judge

Last week while watching the new series of Dragons Den on tv, it brought home to me one of the keys to success in sales. Never pre-judge.

This show is where people pitch their business and ask for money for a percentage of the business. Then the dragons/entrepreneurs ask questions and decide whether they are in or out.

Two of the people who came on, who if you had been wearing your pre-judging glasses, you probably would have dismissed them right away.

The first guy was a stutterer, his idea seem way out and he could'nt seem to get his concept across. But slowly the dragons started to ask questions. The gentleman it turned out owned all the intellectual property rights to all his ideas. He was recognised as a leader in design in his niche and had run one of the most successful company of its type in America. Plus he had earned some serious money before.

He got his £80,000/$130,000 investment.

The next gentleman, was badly dressed with no co-ordination between any of the mix & match of the clothes he was wearing. When he was putting his product idea across, he was full of tics and strange facial expressions and kept looking down to the floor. Yet his product was made and his demonstration of it, flawless.

Again the dragons slowly started to ask questions, mainly about him and his past. He had started one company and sold it for £5,000,000/$8,000,000. He took some of those proceeds and investment a small amount in a new company for a small equity stake. When that start-up was later sold he netted £1,000,000/$1,600,000.

He also got his £100,000/$160,000 investment and with the dragon/entrepreneur who happens to be the the leader in his products field.

The moral if you have'nt already guessed is, never pre-judge. Never under any circumstances should you pre-judge the person in front of you when you are in the sales arena.

Never pre-judge their clothes,accent,colour or where they come from or their social background. You should be of the mindset that everybody has the right to own your product or service. And join your business opportunity.

If you are in mlm, people don't go around with a flashing neon sign on their heads saying, " my life sucks" " I hate my job" " man I got dreams,Big dreams ". Only by starting conversations and asking questions will you find the answers.

Never if someone comes up and asks you to know more, should you say to yourself " nah they is dressed to badly, unshaven and that accent, how could they afford this ". Pre-Judging can and will cost you a fortune in sales and success in your business.

So the next time you are face to face with somebody in the sales arena, take off those pre-judging glasses, even better throw them in the garbage bin, Right Now.

Questions Are The Answers

This weeks post has been inspired by my 3yr old newphew. Rcently my sister, his mother, his father my brother in law and newphew came for a week long visit.

His favourite word is "Why". Whenever he asked a question and your reply was not understood to his satisfaction, out came the famous word "Why". He was never afraid to ask why, if he did not understand your answer. It got me to thinking about us adults and why when we reach a certain age and don't understand something we clam up and become afraid to ask questions to clarify things.

Over the years in meetings and seminars, I have heard nonsense been spoken to explain a simple thing and heard complicated language used to bamboozle someone, who dared asked a question. Have even seen someone buy an item in a shop after hearing all the buzz words and they did not ask one question. They stood looking at said item with glazed eyes and like lamb to the slaughter were led to the checkout till.

So today my aim is to show you that questions are the answer. The more questions you ask the more answers you get and the answers will bring you closer to the truth. Enabling you to close that deal and empower you to make better decisions.

It's like two sides of the same coin. One side will enable you to get to the bottom of the matter, that will produce a decison in your client. The other will alllow you to make better and more informed decisons before spending your money.

Now oftentimes you will have given a presentation about your business, product or service and the person sitting opposite you, will just flatly say no! not for us. You feel perlexed and confused, so allow me to share with you two simple questions that will let you get closer to the real truth.

When your perspective new client says No, look them squarely in the eyes and ask "Why". Then button your lips, let them speak and do not interrupt them at any time. After they have finished speaking ....

You ask one more question "And in addition to that " again button your lips, allow them to speak and do not interrupt. Here in this answer you will find the real reason as to why they said No.

It may be that they have to go someone else to authorise the deal. They may at the local level be only allowed to spend so much and after that the need head office clearence. They may have a silent partner who writes the cheques. An if you are in mlm, they or their spouse may at sometime in the past have had a negative experience. What you are offering may be something new and foreign to them so they have some unspoken fear as to its worthiness.

Whatever comes out as the real reason, this will allow you to allay their fears and proceed with the deal. But and this is a big But, you must practice and even role play asking "Why" shutting up and listening. Then asking the most important question "And in addition to that" and once again shutting up and let them speak freely

If you can master this process of asking these two questions, you will get your answers.

Now lets flip the coin over and how asking questions will lead you to the answers you require in order to make an informed decision. As an example have you ever sat down with a PR or marketing person, after deciding your business needs to be out there more to reach a wider audience.

Quick question, were you getting answers you understood or mumbo jumbo ?
Were you nodding your head wildly to show you understood or afraid to ask a question in case you looked foolish. Now I am just using these two as an example and could easily have picked, nsurance agent, mortage brokers, stock brokers, lawyers etc ................

What really matters here is that you lose the fear to ask questions. If you don't understand something, ask a question and if the answer still leaves you confused, ask another question. Keep asking questions until the reply is in simple, clear and concise language that you understand.

Your money is an object that can't think for itself. It needs you to ask the questions to make sure it is spent and invested wisely.

You must come to the realisation that . . . . . . .

Branding You

You will have heard and seen and read a lot of things about the importance of branding yourself. A couple of weeks ago not long after michael jackson died an article appeared on bloomberg.com about how you could do 10 things to become a brand icon like him.

So today I thought to take those 10 points and relate them back to you and me, normal people striving to grow our business and earn our freedom.

#Start Early
In reality for a home based business owner, this means that when you start your business at no matter what age, you must start building your brand. You must become recognised and known for whatever it is you do.

#Let Go
Well you have already started this process and are now on the thrilling and exciting journey to freedom. Letting go of all your preconceptions is one big move to take. But one that is a must.

#Break Out
In this day and age of web 2.0 and social media mania, you need to be using every available avenue to boost the exposure of you and your business.

#Get Help
This is proably one of the most important aspects of branding you. Get yourself a mastermind team. People you know and trust who will tell you the truth and have skillsets different to you, so that you can learn from them and they from you. The mastermind concept is one of the most profound chapters in Napoleon Hill's book Think and Grow Rich.

#Be Visible
What is it that will make you memorable. You already have it, but just have'nt realised it yet. Is it your dress sense, your logo, your catch line, your sales copy, your mission statement ..............

There is absolutely nothing to stop you. You have the web, you tube, your blog, its endless your possibilites to go global. You can build joint ventures and partnerships with anyone in any city, in any state and in any country you desire. Time to become the president of your own nation.

We all have faults and it helps to acknowledge them. Remember the famous soup nazi episode from Seinfeld, famous for his rudeness. Now don't go to that extreme, but do be aware

Simply this is the way I try to live every day. These couple of lines by Brian Tracy is my motto

In some way whether big or small, time or money, do try to give back to the community that supports your business.

Always Be Early

A couple of articles ago the topic of appointments came up. Today I would like to follow that up by sharing with you one of the keys to closing a sale.

If you can live by this term you will be well on your way to turning appointments into sales. By been early it shows that you respect and value the other persons time. And time is a precious commodity, once used it can never be reclaimed.

It shows that you are scheduled. If they purchase or partner up with you their belief that you will deliver on time and be reliable has just increased 1000 fold.

Think about this, how inclined would you be to do business with somone who shows up late, rushing and sweating and panting in your reception area or the hotel lobby you are meeting in.

It also means that if you tell someone you will call them at 10am the next day, then at 09.59 you should be dialing that number. Even if their line is engaged, you can leave a message, " hi .......... its so and so calling you at 10 am as promised ............. Do you believe you will leave a good impression on the other person. You bet you will.

Now I hope you are not the person who says " but I am always 5 minutes late " I have a friend who keeps telling everyone she is always late and she is and getting worse. Her self talk is talking her into being late, rather than been a person who prides themself on their timekeeping.

Years ago whle still a teenager as part of my college course, I had to go to germany for six months practical work experience. Now at the time this was a revelation to me. Things ran on time, opened on time. But mostly everyone turned up for work on time and at every stage of the day you knew what you should have done and still had to do.

It laid the foundation in me for been on time and scheduled. It was something I always did and only in the last few years have I realised its importantance to your business. Your reputation becomes enshrined in your timekeeping habits.

Quick question. How many people do you know who are brilliant at what they do, but you just could never use them, because their timekeeping and respect for your tme is zilch ?

Got you thinking. Always be early is a disipline as much as a key to success in sales. Watch closely the people who are successful and you will find they do not alllow people to steal their time. They guard it and protect it like a crown jewel.

And so must you. Respect the person you are meeting or calling and be early. Also be very protective of your time and do not let it be stolen by people who do not respect your time.

How many 10 minutes have you allowed these people to waste of your time. Time you could have spent with your family, on your marketing on your follow up calls on your newsletter. Add those 10minutes up and it equates to a lot of time.

Your Business Hero

A couple of weeks ago, an article appeared in the FT mentioning that the U.K. government had appointed entrepreneur Alan Sugar as a business czar, a role model for would be entrepreneurs. Maybe they are slowly realising that its the entrepreneurs who create jobs with their business. So they have decided to appoint these successful people to positions of influence to harbour and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit.

It kinda got me thinkng about the question ; who is your business hero. Whose stories of success through adversity inspires you to keep going building your business with so much negativity around.

Is it Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Alan Sugar, Donald Trump, Thomas Edison, Mary Kay, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison or Michael Dell. Maybe its someone local to your area whose success in business inspires you..

Mine is Harland ( colonel ) Sanders of KFC fame. Allow me to retell his story in brief.

At the age of sixty six Sanders was broke and out of work.
Since the age of twelve he had been fending for himself. After a long time he was finally earning a living for himself and his family, running a gas station with a roadside cafe in the kentucky mountains during the great depression. His cooking skills meant that his cafe became famous throughout the state and was full every day.

Barely having time to enjoy his small bit of success, disaster struck. The new superhighway programme meant traffic was diverted away form his site and town, a ghost town it became and Harland Sanders was ruined.

However at the ripe old age of sixty six, Mr. Sanders got into his beat up cadillac and with his social security cheque as his only means of income, he took off and drove from state to state. Stopping at each restaurant he happened upon and offering to cook dinner for the owner.

Once the owner tasted and fell in love with Sanders special Kentucky Fried Chicken, Harland Sanders would make the owner an offer,
In exchange for the recepie the owner would agree to pay the Colonel , one nickel for each chicken sold.

Ten years later Sanders had built an empire of 600 franchises. Much later after the Colonel had passed away KFC was sold to PepsiCo for $840 million.

To me his story stands out as one of the greats infused with the unique quality of never quitting. Even through all his trials and tribulations he never gave up. And from time to tme I need to go back and re-read his story to keep me on track.

So your question should you decide to answer ; Who is your Business Hero
Who is that one person who inspires you to keep on keeping on.

Appointments = Sales

Yesterday whilst shredding and filing in my construction zone, I came across a handout that I gave out while giving a talk last year on the two reasons people buy from you. It was a short but powerful statement from the book " How I raised myself from failure to success in selling " by Frank Bettger.

It goes like this;
" You can't collect your commisson until you make the sale
You can't make the sale until you write the order
You can't write the order until you have an interview/give presentation
You can't have an interview/ give presentation until you have an appointment "

This statement was the foundation stone to the body of the talk. Even though that statement appeared in a book published in 1954, it is the basis on which sales are made.

Lots of people go to networking events thinking they are going to blast their sales targets for the month. Some people I have met over the years believe a big advert will produce the results to save them and bring glory upon them. Even met some people who spent a fortune on their all singing and dancing website, who are still wondering why their sales stink.

Partly because people forget that the whole sales process starts with securing an appintment. Whether you sell widgets, products,services or have an mlm opportunity unless you secure an appointment you can't present what it is you do.

If you can't present what it is you do, how are you going to get an order or a new associate ?

Your ad should lead to someone calling or e-mailing you to find out more. To find out more an appointment must be set. And if you are out networking, its about peaking the interest of people that leads them to make an appointment to find out more.

How do they find out more ? By you giving a presentation person to person or via the web

How do they allow you to do a presentation ? By setting up an APPOINTMENT

Maybe just maybe its time to get back to basics and remembering the building block to sales

Appointment = Presentation = Write the order = Sale = Collect Commisson

Incentives

Came across this quote a number of years ago when I first started out on my journey of building my home based business. Some of you will be working alone, some building a team and some employing a small or large amount of people.
,
One of the things that crops up time and time again is how you can incentivise yourself, your team or your employees to produce more so that you can continue to have a viable business. There is loads of theories out there about what you need to do and how to measure them and so on.

But what is often neglected is good old human nature. It is very rare for a human being to carry on for someone else if they feel they just can't make it, can't feel how it can be achieved. Because you need to sit down and say can this be done and is the reward good enough for doing it. If you make the burden too heavy most folks will give up and the reward should be attainable by one and all, not just the superstars in your team.

Herein lies your dilema. If you start worrying about the cost of the incentive as opposed to the benefits; i.e increased sales, more skillful team, more cohesive team, failure looms on the horizon. Now I ain't saying you gotta bankrupt yourself or your company, because thats not the aim.

Rather what will be the benefits to the team/employees. What new skills will they learn and sharpen to assist them in their future careers. Benefits for others first will always lead to benefits for the business. Having the mentality of push, push, push will only lead to push back, push back, push back. Ending in a state of attrition and a stagnant business.

Yes it is a balancing act. You need more sales for the business to survive. You need everyone on the team to be involved 100%. You ain't got that 100% involvment and commitment, nobody gains. So start thinking about the benefits to your team first. Set the parameters and stick to them. Don't go changing the goalposts just cause week 1 did not go to plan.

You start moving the goalposts and you will end up wtih a team of highly de-motivated people. Your word which is your bond will become useless and valueless. Celebrate each success. Praise every effort to reach the target and most importantly pay out when payout is due.

Speaking from personal experience of my time in the corporate jungle, nothing was so guaranteed to annoy and de-motivate people as shifting goalposts, not keeping your word and making excuses for delaying the payout.

Incentives are a great way to grow your business, because when you concentrate on how it will grow your team first, your business will be rewarded.

Ever Failed ?

Have you ever failed at something and just simply stopped and given up there and then. Or have you ever failed, sat back and looked at where you went wrong and got back up on that horse.

Sometimes the weight of failure is just so heavy that you may not believe you have the strength to carry on. Well for those of you who at times have felt like that, allow me to share this story of failure.

The name of this so called failure is a man by the name of Abraham Lincoln.

Do you believe that if you faced your occaisonal failures like Lincoln faced his, you would succeed in the end. Just because you may have failed at something once, does not mean you are a permanent failure. The most important piece of failure is the willingness to learn why it happened, get back up and strive forward one more time.

How different would the world be if Lincoln had given up after his first failure. I believe it took Edison over 2,000 attempts before the lightbulb was invented. Ray kroc was over fifty years of age before he bought McDonalds and turned into a worldwide success.

So why should you allow one failure to derail you from achieving the dreams you have for you and your family. Everytime you feel like quitting after a failure, just go back and re-read the story of Abraham Lincoln and his failures before his ultimate success.

Oh and by the way, it took me three attempts to pass my driving test.

So what small failure is stopping you from getting back up and attaining your success ?

Do You Have Credit

Yesterday whilst watching a great documentary on cnbc about the credit crunch called " house of cards ", the host david faber started off the with statement that credit comes from latin and its root means to believe.

In other words you give/get credit because you/they believe it will be re-paid.

So I went along and checked it out and yes its roots are the latin words credere and credens. Definition being, to believe, trust.
examples being; credentials, credit, incredible.
It got me to thinking about the word credit and its meaning from a homebusiness owners and entrepreneurs point of view.

Rather than think about credit in monetary terms, lets go from the definition of the word " to believe ".

Bottom line, do your customers, associates and partners believe in you enough that they will give you credit/belief in terms of time, mentoring and resources to succeed, because they believe you will pay them back one hundred fold.

Now if they are giving you this line of belief (credit), cherish it, nurture it and do whatever you can do to bring it to fruition. Whatever you do, do not take this belief in you and wrap it up in a package and slice it and dice it and parcel it out to those who do not believe in you. Think credit crunch !

Lets flip this thought around and put you in the position as the one giving out the credit. Lets focus in a bit closer on the mlm and networking marketing industries.

When you partner up with a new associate, what you really are saying to them is " I believe in You ".

I believe in you enough that I am giving you a a five year line of credit. Because I believe in you, you are going to get me standing with you shoulder to shoulder, my mentoring, my techniques and empowering beliefs shared with you, day by day, week by week, month by month and year by year.

Here's an important sidebar, you can't go giving out lines of credit/belief to anyone who can fog up a mirror. Do that and you get sub-prime associates. Look what happened there.

Rather you must be like an old time bank and vet your potential associates to assertain beyond doubt that they are worth you bestowing a line of credit/belief to.

When you take that extra time to assertain if your potential new associate is worthy of your line of credit/belief, you will reap the rewards one hundred fold. Please remember, just as you vet for credit/belief worthiness, your potential believers in you will also be running a credit check on you.

So lets ask that question one more time
"Do you have credit ? "

Do You Gossip ?

Now I don't know about you but I hate gossip. Hate been around negative nasty people always putting someone down.

And we all know someone who gossips, yap yap yap, a constant flow of nothing except verbal garbage. So today I would like to share with you a story that craig garber(king of copy) shared on his blog. It comes from way back in ancient times and maybe because of that its lesson is invaluable.

Let the story begin .....................
Socrates the ancient greek philosopher, so the story goes held knowledge in high esteem. One day as he is sitting in the square, his mind sorting through lifes imponderables when someone comes rushing up to him, nearly out of breath

"socrates,socrates you never ...... I gotta tell you............. about your friend .............."
So socrates being socrates says " hang on hang on, sit, chill, lets put this story through the triple filter "

The gossiper gwaping, nods his head. Filter 1 " have you made sure that what you are about to tell me about my friend is True "
Gossiper replies " ah no "
Ok ok, lets try Filter 2
" Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something Good"
Gossiper replies " ah no .................. in fact .........."
Ok Ok lets try Filter 3
" Is what you are about to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me "
Gossiper sits big round eyes staring up at socrates and goes " ah no "

Socrates looks the man right in the eye and goes " if what you want to tell me is neither True, Good or Useful, why tell me at all "

Imagine how different your day would be if you applied the triple filter. Wow going through the day speaking only truth, good and usefulness. How brave are you. Could you insist that your friends or people you meet use the triple filter before they open their mouth.

Would you like to be known as the person who speaks truth, good and usefulness ?

Will You be that person ? When you walk by, people go " hey there's X the triple filter person "
Would you like that monicker for you and your business. How about on your contact card, right after your name putting the initials T.G.U.

Building a business based on Truth, Good, Usefulness

Honesty across the universe has been described as " moral uprightness, the quality,condition or characteristic of being fair, just, truthful and morally upright "

All over the world there are companies who can award quality standards certificates to business. These tend to be the ISO in its various forms.

So if a quality agency was to come and audit you, would you achieve the the world recognised standard for honesty ? Would they come to the conclusion that you your business is run in a fair,just,truthful and morally upright fashion.

Would they allow you to attach the honesty quality sign in all your advertising material. To say to all your customers and clients and potential customers and clients ..........

Yes X conducts their business in an honest manner and you can be guaranteed, that you the customer will be dealt with in a manner that at alll times is fair, just, truthful and morally upright. Imagine been able to say, yes; we have achieved the Honesty quality standard.

How would that differentiate you from the crowd. How far above the crowd would you and your business be elevated. Imagine when people refer you on, its because simply you treat everyone in a fair, just, truthful and morally upright manner. How much in hard cash would you be willing to deplete your bank account by just so you could have the honesty standard awarded to you.

In reality it would not cost you one red cent or one copper coin or even one silver dollar. You can achieve this at no cost to your bank balance. Make the decision today that in all your dealings you will be,
Fair,
Just,
Truthful,
Morally upright.

That's it, if you do these four things on a consistent daily basis, people will be awarding you the Honesty quality standard, no audits required.

Sounds simple and it is. It is simple and if you believe you cannot at all times be fair, just , truthful and morally upright with your customers and clients ............... Well maybe your business ain't for you.

So be different, stand elevated above the crowd and become known as a person/business, who are fair, just, truthful and morally upright and watch your rewards grow.

Honesty is simply the best policy.

Independence ( 3 Currencies of Success ) Part 3

We now reach the final part of 3 ingredients of success. Today we conclude with the final ingredient Independence.

Lets go to the dictionary to lay the foundation for Independence. It describes independence as been " the state of being independent". And independent is explained as " not dependent or relying on others, not subordinate to, completely self-governing ".

So lets start the journey of filling up your currency vault with Independence. " not subordinate to and completely self - governing ".

Quick question, who are you subordinate to ? Now before you start jumping up and down, lets see .................
banks,mortage company, credit card company the boss you answer to and hate. Now how does that make you feel about you as an independent business person or having a business that is full of independence..

Okay you may not be feeling too independent at this moment and time. But you know what, if you keep your currency vault full of integrity and respect you are well on your way to independence. Independence has to be earned, just like respect.

Look back at the history of business and you will find companies that were once independent, but no longer so. Look around your local business area and there will be a couple of business people who were once the king of the hill, now trading time for money from someone else.

Now if you look deeper into why they can no longer claim to act with independence, you will find that somewhere along the line, they decided to trade their currencies of Integrity and Respect for greed and the fast buck. They forgot the golden rule " no customers, no business "

Maybe they fell to one of the seven deadly sins, pride, covet-ousness, lust, envy, anger, gluttony and sloth.

You may be consistently building up your integrity and respect currencies until your vault is overflowing. But suddenly just before your day of independence arrives, pride takes over and you feel too big and important to talk to your customers. You start to envy your competition and you want that business soo bad.

Gluttony takes over and you bid over the odds for a business just to say " I now own this ". And in six months it has eaten all your reserves because you were too prideful to pay respect to the law of due dilligence. Consider what would happen if you became slothful. You start not doing what you said you were going to do. Your word becomes worthless and your reserve of integrity and respect is devalued to junk bonds.

That once overflowing vault, full with currencies of integrity and respect starts emptying as fast as sand runs through your hands. One day you will look around and wonder, how did I go from been in a position of independence to one of being dependent.

Simply put into practice on a daily basis the duty of operating from a position of Integrity and treating everyone with Respect.

Do this and your day of Independence will arrive sooner than you know.

Respect ( 3 currencies for success ) part 2

Welcome back to Part 2 of 3 currencies for success. Integrity,Respect and Independence.
Today we will discuss Respect.

The dictionary defines Respect as " to heed, to value, to show esteem, to treat with consideration." So lets be truthful and get right into the meat of the message right now.

Quick question. Do you treat everyone you meet with consideration and do they know that you value them ?

A long time ago an expression was relayed to me, which had a great effect on me and it went like this " Everybody is somebody's Somebody "

Your potential clients and customer is somebody special to someone. Could be their husband/wife,son/daughter, grandson/grandaughter, niece/newphew, favourite cousin, their best friend from school or the neighbourhood etc ...........,

You kinda getting the picture here. Everyone you interact with on a daily basis will tell that someone special how you dealt and treated them.

So how do you stop them been negative about you and your business. Simply treat everyone you meet with respect. Yes simply by showing respect to one and all. Let them know that you value them and treat them with consideration, something very few of your competitors are doing right now.

You might be saying, nah thats toooo simple, well here is something to chew on
Why your customers/ clients quit
1% Die
3% Move away
5% Other friendships
14% Product dissatisfaction
BUT
68% QUIT because of an attitude of indifference toward them by some employee/owner.

Another quick question. Can you right now, afford to lose 68% of your clients/customers, because you did not respect them ? You know what's more scary, is that unless you learn to value the currency of Respect, you will continue to lose 68% of your customers/clients for ever more.

Last week we talked about the value of Integrity, today the value of Respect.

3 Currencies of Success(part 1 Integrity )

Part 1

Integrity, Respect and Independence are the 3 currencies to success. Over the next couple of weeks we will talk about each one and today we start with Integrity.

Integrity is defined in the dictionary as " the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards ".

We will stick with professional standards in this article and leave the morals to a higher authority.

" steadfastly adhering to " meaning if you advertise or have any guarantees in your sales literature, that you stick to them. You do not try and weasel your way out. What you say is what you do. You say your lines are open 8am till 8pm, then they are open till 8pm. On your voicemail you say you will return calls within 24-36 hrs, do so. Integrity, your price is your price and your word is your word.

So many out there today say they are full of integrity and use it in their sales bumpf, when in reality they are full of hot air and change direction as the wind changes. Policies and guarantees are something they suck their finger on and put it up to sky and go " yup it be blowing this way today so lets up the price". Do not play around with your integrity as it value can be priceless.

A currency is something that can be traded and its value is recognised. Like the dollar V's yen. The greenback over the years has become a global currency. Imagine that the integrity part of your business is percieved as a high value currency. Something that could be the integrity standard, the benchmark for others to follow.

Something that others when in conversation go " i'm buying " or " I'm joining,partnering up with ......." cos they have an integrity currency that is superior to any other on the market today. For your Integrity currency to be valued and regarded as priceless, standards have to be set.

Yes high professional standards have to be set by you, followed by you and adhered to by you. Because if you do not follow the standards of integrity set by you, then no-one else will either. Then your integrity currency becomes just like a dot com stock in the old days. Rising up first on hype and crashing down to earth just like the dot com stocks, when people realised there was nothing to sustain them, they were in truth, worthless. Worthless from day one when all is said and done.

Is that how you want the integrity currency in your business valued. No, did not think so, then raise your standards, follow your standards and adhere to them steadfastly.

Earn the right for your integrity currency to be viewed as the global standard, the one all other integrity currencies have to be valued against.

No 1 Reason

Reason comes from the latin word "ratus" which translates as fixed by calculation. The other word which has "ratus" as its root is Ration.

The question now becomes do you know the reason why you do what you do on a daily basis to grow your business. To become successful, because when you know and understand that reason it becomes a lot easier to get up and do things.

What is your reason for placing that advert ?
What is your reason for joining that group ?
What is your reason for starting that business ?
What is your reason for prospecting ?
What is your reason for following up ?

We could go on, but I believe you get the drift here. There is no point doing anything if you have no idea of what the return to you and your business will be. This is both true for a short term or long term return. To be in control and say " this is the reason why I am doing such and such ".

This will put you in charge every day. Imagine you been able to say to yourself on a daily basis " I am in charge ", simply because you now know the reason behind the action.

A second word that comes from the latin word " ratus " is Ration. Fixed by calculation, is you deciding how much time is allocated to a task. There is only 24 hours in a day so how are you rationing up the day.

These questions are not difficult to answer when the challenge of the reason why has been overcome and understood leaving you in charge.

Harvest Time Now

Harvest is defined in the dictionary as "the results of past or prior actions or behaviours".

There has been alot of coverage in the business press recently, concerning the fact that across the world the planting of crops has fallen and will continue to fall during the year. Prices have dropped so no sense in planting seeds, that are going to produce a lower return and value than anticipated. This is current thinking in the agri-business.

Now how about you the home based business owner. Because you must still invest in yourself and your business. You have to keep planting seeds now. You have to sow the dream of financial freedom each and every day. To nuture these seeds within you and your associates, personal development has to be an ongoing activity.

Imagine you, like the farmers stopped sowing the seeds of financial freedom. What will your harvest look like when the time to reap your rewards comes around. Now your time will come.

Because if you want to reap the results you deserve or believe you deserve, then you must be in control of the planting actions. You must take charge and lead the way in the planting, sowing and nurturing the seeds of financial freedom.

If you give away control to the enemy. The negative, nasty, know it alls, you will become like the farmers and believe that results will be so small for your efforts, you just don't bother sowing on a daily basis.

Take a look around you now, because you have to decide to be in charge. You must take ownership of the daily planting and nurturing of the seeds to maturity. Harvest time is a direct result of your input on a daily basis.

Sometimes I explained the reasoning behind this quote well and other times failed dismaly to the message across. That was until this came across my screen recently;

and next on my desk to read are

Now you running your home based business or getting started in mlm might be asking "what has reading got to do with my success"

Quite a lot as it happens. If you take the time to study successful business people, you will find that the majority were also avid readers. But more than that books also give you access to learn the mistakes that have caused people to fail.

Knowing what to avoid can sometimes be more important than you realise.. As the quote says " books are the most paitent of teachers." Finding out what the succesful read on their journey of success and what they are currently reading is not a major challenge anymore, thanks to the internet.

Some of you will have heard of the mythical/true story of how bill gates after reading Charles Hannel's " the masterkey system", gave up his studies and concentrated on making microsoft the global force it has become.

Just recently rhonda byrne( the secret ) after reading the wonderful age old success book "the science of getting rich" by wallace wattles, brought to the masses one message from this book, and in the process earned millions.

So who knows by making the decision to read a book a month, you may find the key to propel you to success and avoid the mistakes made by fools. You may meet the wise mentor whose footprints left in the sand is all you need to follow to avoid years of heartache.

If you currently do not have reading a book high on your agenda to achieve success and lead others to success. Please re-consider your actions,remember 15 minutes a day is all it takes to read one book a month.

History Repeats

A few words from Andrew Carnagie "When the cyclone of 1873 struck us we began to reef sail in every quater..................... the first outburst of the storm had effected the financial world connected with the stock exchange. It was some time before it reached the commercial and manufacturing world. But the situation grew worse and worse and finally led to the crash "

Does this sound familiar to what has occurd in 2008 and is continuing on into 2009. It sure does. But lets keep it in the context of you and your home based business. If history on occaison repeats itself what are you doing thats working for you and are you repeating it, again and again to your advantage.

Now if you are doing the same things over and over again that are not bringing home the bacon , but you like doing them cos you are comfortable with them. The history of no gain will keep on repeating itself time and time again.

History like stats is all in the past. However if your history of doing a certain thing brings in and earns you financial rewards, keep on repeating it. Back when corporate world had me by the tail. The monthly meeting was a thing to dread." why are you .009% down in this area and why are you .007% overspent in this area. It was nearly always negative with vey little to celebrate even though you may have had sales that exceeded budget and all margins were inline. The constant nitpicking was a downer.

Then one day after changing companies an area manager whispered these wonderful words to me. "when you have had a good and exceptional month, keep note of what you did to achieve this and keep repeating day in day out. Week in week out and month in and month out and soon you will have a system. A system that produces results."

So the question you must ask yourself is what way are you looking at history. Are you nitpicking yourself into a financial depression or are you looking at and writing down your victories and how you achieved them. If this is you, just keep on repeating.

It can be too easy to follow the mob, so please remember it is your business and you are responsible for your success. You are responsible to make sure that the history of success keeps on repeating itself.

Hubris

Hubris, this word has been appearing alot in the financial pages and in pieces written about wall street excess. So to clarify the meaning of the word I went to my chambers dictionary, where it said

Hubris " insolence, over-confidence, arrogance such as leads to disaster or ruin "

Now what is happening at present is nothing new. Its been going on since man began recording the works of other men; Solomon, Roman Empire, Napoleon and great financiers of the ages.

Over-confidence and arrogance sets in and as human beings we take delight in the hubris of others when it strikes. So when building and becoming successful in your business, don't succumb to the sin of hubris.

Remain humble, it was not you alone who made your success. Bet there was someone beside you who encouraged you. Some associate you could rely on for impartial truth. And your customers and clients who believed in you and your product or service. Believed that you could solve a problem or make a difference in their life, business or personal.

Without the addition of these others you would not succeed. It is all tied in together and it would be very insolent of you to believe you did it all yourself and nothing can bring you down.

Humility my friend is the keyword. Be humble enough to realise that without others you would be nowhere. Be humble enough to give graitude and thanks to those that have assisted you on your journey.

Pray that you never succumb to the sin of HUBRIS

The Fog Of Words

Words is something I have spoken of before. But this example of words surrounded in a sea of fog,appeared in the ft last week.

A government department advertising a job position/vacancy stated thus
"This role is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of approved pan-government Collaborative Category Strategies, and developing capablility and capacity throughout the supply chain, ensuring sourcing strategies lead to a competitive supply arrangements and deliver the opimum efficency gains "

Now that is a very complicated way of saying absolutely nothing. Clarity is not uppermost in the writers mind or maybe it was as clear as mud to the person who wrote that, perchance a committee.

However, you as a business owner, are you promoting your business in a manner that even a 10yr old would understand the benefits of doing business with you. Take a cold hard look at all your sales bumpf and re-read them through the eyes of a 10yr old.

You may be a genius,superstar,guru and your company may be on some list of potential high fliers and your product or service may be the best in the universe or known to mankind.

But if the people reading your words can't get the meaning cos they are swirling around in a fog of self smugness, forget it. That advert you are thinking of putting out there this week,today even. Re-read it with a cold eye and ask yourself,

Can our target market understand the words in our message. If I saw this advert, pr piece would it influence me to find out more or hit the snooze button.

You are not writing for you or your associates in your industry. You are writing for your potential and existing clients, who studies now show have an attention span of 45seconds. 45 seconds to grab their attention and draw then in. 45 seconds to arouse childlike curiosity within them.

Are your words crystal clear or like one of those old pea-souper fogs, which London was once famous for. My mentor John di Lemme speaks alot about words. He says that if you take the S and place in front of word you get Sword.

Are your words a double edged sword, thats going to cut you off at the knees, before you even start. Or are your words so good, so clear they are going to cut down all competitors and leave you standing as the

Courage To Listen

Today we shall concentrate on the second line of this quote,"courage is what it takes to sit down and listen."

How many of us after giving a presentation,sales pitch etc............ have the courage, real courage to sit back down and listen. Listen to what the other person has to say about your proposal,business or product.

Become so silent that we really listen, hear their position and answer the question they really ask. You are not one of those people who just runs off at the mouth, interrupts another before they have finished their sentance/question.

And in doing so you don't answer anything except the fears you have yourself. If this is you, its not too late to get the courage to listen. Get the courage to form the habit of being silent and really listen.

Listening leads to understanding, understanding leads to empathy and empathy leads to answering the question that was asked.

When you start answering the question that was asked your results will change. Your sales will improve, your advice will be sought, but most importantly,

You will be known as a person

An item appeared in my inbox this week,with an excerpt from Brian Tracy's book "the power of discipline". He mentioned how at an event he met Kop Kopmeyer a famous observer and writer on success.

Brian Tracy asked him, out of the thousands of success principles "what is the most important one." He replied with this statement ...........

"Do what you should do,
When you should do it,
Whether you feel like it or not." quote by thomas huxley

If we do not have discipline then everything we have learned is useless. The self discipline to do what we should do whether we feel like it or not is such a powerful statement, would highly recomend you print out the above quote.

Put it on your fridge, computer,dash of your car, in your golf bag, gym bag. Type it out big and frame it and hang it in your construction zone ( office ) where you are building your business.

Think about it, how many times have you said to yourself, gonna read such and such book, gonna call this person, gonna run this advert, gonna go to this event, gonna join this club........... gonna,gonna,gonnna and we did nothing.

Last week I was having a conversation with one of our mastermind group, who happens to own a marketing business. He told me that he was busier now than he was in 08.

So I stopped for a moment and asked the important question why ? people are using their redundancy payments to start a business. But then they need guidance, a system, a strategy to not only get up and running, but to stay on track.

Struck me that these people were searching for someone to assist in bringing their dreams alive and bring value to their lives. Now as my associate is doing well, lets flip the question,

Is Your Order Book Full ?

Many people are out there now, searching. After coming to the realisation that there ain't no thing as a job for life. They are searching for a leader, a strategist to bring their dreams to life and fulfillment.

So is your door being knocked off its hinges with enquiries, questions, people searching and hungry for answers. Are you that leader.

Do people percieve you as a leader, a strategist who can bring value, build realationships and steer them on the right road to success. You gotta ask yourself that question " Do I bring value to the people I lead ? "

With all thats been going on with more job losses than jobs created, lead me to re-read a piece on work by Kahlil Gibran. It is one of 26 essays in his book the prophet.

So today I would just like to share this with you.

Work
" You work that you may keep peace with the earth and the soul of the earth.

For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons and to step out of life's procession that marches in majesty and proud submisson towords the infinite.

When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.

Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison?

Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune.

Keep On Keeping On

Keep on keeping on, is a line from Think an Grow Rich. It came to me today as nearly eveything kinda kept breaking down today.

Some marketing stuff was going so far then a breakdown in the programme and all sorts of bits and pieces like that. Computer started playing up, oh lets say it just a horrible day.

However I did not stop, kept going, kept plugging away and eventually some things got completed, not all that i planned. But if I had just given up and walked away, nothing would have been completed at all. My progress would have being zero.

So by keeping on keeping on, about 40% was achieved today. Question, do you walk away when things get tough, complicated or obsticles appear. Or do sit back study the situation and keep on keeping on and get things done.

In business for yourself, it can be easy to throw in the towel and say tomorrow is another day. Well tomorow never comes, cos tomorrow becomes the present. A good question to ask your self at times like this, " What am I doing today that will bring me closer to my goal". If everytime you hit a bump, you sit back and say " ah sod it catch up with this tomorrow" am afraid thats going to put you behind on your journey to success.

Time cannot be recaptured or added back on. Once its gone its gone and it is proably one of the hardest things anyone can do is to Keep on Keeping On. Once mastered it will sustain you through many a struggle,bump or curveball you may encounter. The feeling you get when you know you just did not walk away in frustaration is amazing.

So in these times when things ain't going as planned, calls ain't being returned and all the other things out there, please remember

Language of Business

The fruit of the idea for this blog came while reading a piece in last mondays ft. The key points were written down, knowing that I would complete it after hearing president Obama's speech today.

The piece in the ft was how it was time to really worry when governments/politicians started speaking business gobbledigook when talking about these difficult economic times. As an ex corporate slave, I endured years of creeds, misson statements and all sorts of business speak, that meant nothing. Just nice pleasing words to keep away the serious look behind the curtains.

But as my mentor john di lemme says " the words you use will create your results ". President Obama peaked my curiosity with his "Yes We Can " speech. His words carried him all the way to the white house to be a First. His words today will carry him further than the so called 100 days of grace.

So the key point being that your words must ring true. They must not be the hollowed words spoken over and over again by politicians so many times that people just ignore them. To get yourself and your business noticed you must speak the truth about your business, product and service.

Your words should speak of the way you are going to serve your customers and business associates. How you are going to serve your employees and in these tough days how you are going to serve your community.

Don't let your words become the hollowed out white noise that people will ignore and flick away from hearing. A man today has become the first african/american president of the united states and it was his words that carried him there.

Decision to Commit

So we are into the third week of the new year. All those things you decided to commit to in the new year to earn and secure your financial future, still doing them.

Just being reading "the lombardi rules " and in the section on commitment it talks about the word decision. It states that the latin root for decision is "to cut away from "

One thing you should make sure that you cut away from is all the excuses. If you can learn to cut away from all the " shoulda, coulda, woulda, someday and the maybes, the decisions you made to achieve success become easier.

Now I did not say they become easy, but they become easier. When you recognise that your commitment level has been falling cos you have been hanging on to the excuses, it becomes easier to cut them away.

Making a decision to commit is hard and at times can be lonely, but if you can grab onto the concept that you need to cut away, trim the fat thats slowing you down. Your commitment level will go up, you will start to achieve things and those excuses will be nothing but a blur on the landscape, far away.

You will stop and wonder how did I get here ? your memory will kick in and say " I cut away all the excuses ".

Have You Lapsed

So six days into the new year, how are you getting on with your goals,resoutions and targets. Still on track or have you lapsed.

If you have lapsed, thats ok you can get back on track again. Just cos you lapsed does not mean you should give up. Don Shula reached the superbowl 3 times and only on the third did he win it with the Dolphins.

Just cos you lapsed, don't stop, get back up again and start all over. Remember when you first started learning to ride a bike. Bet you fell off a couple of times, but you got back up and started all over again. And when you were riding that bike like lance armstrong did you even think about the times you fell off. Hell no, so be the same way with your goals and targets.

here's a little saying that will help you on your way,
"inch by inch is a cinch,
yard by yard is hard,
mile by mile is a trial "

Get back up, get focused and get going inch by inch and before you know you will be riding across the finish line with the yellow jersey on your back. Don't say its not possible, it is and if one little lapse is going to unsettle you, well.................. lets not go there.

So another year begins. You will read and hear a lot of so called predictions and whats winning out at the moment is " cutting the cloth to suit " , "pull back " , "cutting costs ", "reducing headcount/inventory etc etc etc.

However in the spirit of being different I have decided that this should be the year of giving.
Its time to stop holding back and start giving. As mentioned in the heading of this blog its sharing what I have learned is the reason this blog was started.

And rather than me ramble on, its time to share with you some quotes based around the theme of giving.

Don't hold back whatever your secret is for being successful, share it and you will recieve it back and more.

At times you may feel a little bit isolated, alone, while all the crowd is taking, be different and decide that this is the year of Giving. And if it feels like you are being battered and buffeted by a gale force wind, here is a little something to keep you going.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Today I have just had the worst experience ever when it comes to customer service. I am not going to name the company,not yet.

The next e mail I recieve from them will determine whether I stay as a customer and tell everyone what a great company they are and how they resolved my problem or I tell as many people as I can not to touch them with a barge pole.

Back in the corporate world when I worked in the service industry a wise man once told me " It takes 6 months to gain a new customer and 60 seconds to lose them "

Never have I forgotten those words. Over the years and travelling the world there have being many who paid lip service to customer service and those great ones who lived it.

Another wise man said these words, " no customers no business "
And this is so true whether your product or service costs $1 or $1,000,000
If nobody is purchasing, you ain't got a business.

So from the bottom of my heart I urge all who own a home based business, mlm, affilate, coaching whatever, never never lose sight of the fact that if you have no customers you have no business.
Please do not pay lip service but live and breath customer service and there is one book I would recomend on this subject, its called
"Customer Satisfaction is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless" by Jeffrey Gitomer
Since I bought this book in Philadelphia airport on my way home to Ireland after being at a 2 day event in Atlanta, it is always by my side and constantly being reffered to since sept 05.

INVEST AND RE-INVEST

As part of my homework when building my business from my construction zone during the week, I take time to watch a couple of times a week squawk box and sqawk on the street.

Lately they keep asking guests "have we bottomed" what should one invest in" when is it right to get back into the market" and variations on these questions.

This due dilligence allows me to talk comfortably with the many business owners I come across during the week.

But for anyone building any type of home based business, the most important commodity to invest in is yourself. And you should re-invest your profits in yourself. To develop oneself should be of high priority.

If you look at most success stories you will find one common thread and that is personal development. Invest in books,cds,dvds, seminars,networking, anything that will move you forward.

When money is flowing in don't stop, but keep re-investing, keep up to date. A lot of operations that were successful, stop being so, because they did not do so and became outdated.

Just look around your local community and see what were once successful are no longer there.
And one of the reasons for their extinction will be not re-investing in themselves.

You, yourself are your most important commodity and to keep producing you must re-invest in yourself. So when you keep hearing what should one invest in,

Stand Strong

This wil be a short piece about standing strong in the face of the enemy and their negativity.

Last night while out socialising with friends, someone who I know quite well, came up to me and started in with a load of negativity about the current climate. when I replied stating the possiblities out there, they were floored.

They then tried to come back at me about my home based business. Saying I no longer hang around and listen to negative people, they got the hint and moved on to poison someone else.

Now it takes time to gain the strength to do as I did. Two years ago I certainly could'nt. Now its like swatting off an annoying fly, that keep buzzing around your head all day.

This coming year, you will meet loads of this type of person who has a great capacity to spread negativity like an infectous virus.

You must be loaded up with the antidote,
Your number one habit for 2009 is to load yourself up with at least 2 hours of personal development each and every day.
Do this one thing and you will be able to STAND STRONG.

this past ten days and normal everyday occurences have prompted me to write about this important topic. its come up in books I am reading and in webinar from my coach/mentor and in chats with business associates. ( how to get rich + the billionaire who was'nt..... books)

Your word is all you really have along with the most precious commodity Time. Everything else is really just decoration. Do what you say and say what your gonna do.

Tooo many people don't realise the power of words. As my mentor john di lemme says " the words you use will create your results "

If you say you will do something, Just Do It
If you say you will call someone at such and such a time, Just Do It
If you say you will meet someone at a certain time, Just Do It
If you say you will pass on certain information, Just Do It
If you say you will sell something at a set price, Just Do It
If you say you will buy something from someone, Just Do it

But probably the most important person you can follow through with, is Yourself

Time waits for no man
you have probably heard that statement millions of times, well its true.
there is only 24 hours in a day. not 25,26,27 just 24.
By not wasting your own time, you won't waste anyone else's time.
You cannot reclaim back time. once its gone its gone and gone for good.

So be someone who Just Does It and a respecter of Time;
It will stand you in good stead

"Financial Meltdown"

We are hearing a lot at this moment about financial meltdown, credit crisis, bailouts for various sectors etc.

To me in lay man terms it comes down to Trust and Truth.
What has occured is that a lot of institutions have bad debts. They put these debts off balance sheet, which means they don't effect profits and don't affect year end bonus.

But instead of being truthful about how much bad debt they had offline, they kept denying they had a problem with bad debt. As time went on they started to say well " we have written off x amount." Except a short while later another announcement of write offs.

People began to ask "how much more to write off ?" and another answer of smoke and mirrors. So we get to the stage of no-one trusting anyone, beause they were not truthful. banks won't lend to each other cos they have no trust and if they do its at extremely high rates. Which hits the average person.

Chambers dictionary defines trust as "worthiness of being relied on "
It defines truth as "faithfulness,constancy,veracity;"

So as you go about building your home based business, are you being truthful and can people trust you.

A very short sentance, but a powerful one. If you are not telling the truth about your business,product or service, how can anyone trust you. If no-one trusts you, will they join you or buy from you.

You have to become a person of worthiness so that you gain a worthy business.
Please do not end up like some of the institutions or countries who are now struggling, mainly because they were economical with the truth and ultimately they lost the trust.

I have always liked this saying and forgive me I can't remember who to credit it to

" All things being equal,people prefer to do business with someone they know,like and trust. And all things being unequal, people still prefer to do business with people they know,like and trust "

Go out and build your brand on Trust and Truth, the results will surprise you.

"Black Ice"

"Black Ice" as defined by Chambers dictionary is "a thin layer of transparent ice on a road".
This is a very thin layer you can see while walking but when driving in dark it can be hard to spot. as happened to me yesterday, when my car wobbled cos it could'nt get a grip on ice and threw me off course.

Now when you are building your business, dangers are all around. Some you can see quite clearly and others whilst you may feel it, you just can't see it. just like driving in dark and your lights disguise what you would normally see and you don't realise the potential danger.

It can be someone who is blinding you with science to obscure the true picture. It can be deals that you know in your gut are too good to be true, but the web of deceit built around it is so complex, you don't know where to start to unravel it.

It might even be someone close to you who is shining the light of brilliance around you and your ideas, when really they are just blowing smoke up you. So secretly are they wishing you and your adventure ill.

Are there any cures for this ailment ?
Well just like driving in black ice, drop down the gears so the engine is in a slower rev and you can recover if you hit a patch of black ice.
Due diligence is one of the best things you can and must do. whether its on the deal or the people involved in the deal.

Consulting with your mastermind team/advisors is one prescription you should always have.
Your gut/instincts are very rarely wrong. This has been developed with age and experience and linked in with your mastermind team, should keep you and your business vehicle protected.

So as you continue on your journey to success be prepared in these dark winter months for patches of Black Ice.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS ( SERENDIPITY)

"Opportunity knocks"

Yesterday while searching for new books in bookstores in the city before I headed on to my second appointment of the day, something occured. A friend of mine who also happens to be a business owner was walking past. I hailed him and we chatted for awhile catching up on forgotten comrades from our student days. then he asked me if I had started a certain business to go along with my own http://www.energysaverseurope.com

To cut a long story short, the government has brought in new laws regarding energy assesments of new and second hand homes relating to selling and renting. I said no and he said I would give you all my business if you were. He now runs the family real estate business. We parted and went our seperate ways.

When i eventually got home, could'nt really concentrate, as this opportunity kept running around my head. But eventually I let it go. As things would happen, in the shower this morning an idea came of how I could assist my friend of another business associate of mine. So now next week I will run this by the associate and then call in to see my old friend. You never know what may unfold, lead to or end up.

To put this idea of a conversation with an opportunity advanced can lead to something bigger, here are a few examples from the history of business.
In 1919 James L. Kraft was unemployed and took the only job available to him., selling cheese door to door. in those days of no packaging, it was a messy, stinky and not too hygenic of a job. But he kept looking at the milk in the milk bottles and how it stayed good all year round.
Long story short, he messed around with pasturisation and packaging and started the Kraft food company. Which last quater turned over 10 Billion dollars.
all because someone gave him the opportunity to sell cheese.

In the 1920's amidst the great depression, publishers were in trouble, trying to sell books when people had little molah. So an ad guy Harry Scherman, thought why not sell them like magazines, subscription like and lo and behold The Book of The Month Club was born and created molah and wealth.

Col Sanders, had a gas station and truck stop diner. He developed his famous spices for his deep fried chicken and his place was packed and times were good. A new highway was being built and at the last minute a decision was made to place it along a different route. Bypassing good ol Col Sanders. Withinn 12 months he was busted and out of business. But he got to thinking and loaded up his car and off he set to sell his recipe for chicken to other diners for a royalty fee.
Guess what Kentucky Fried Chicken was born.

So how many times has an opportunity come a knocking at your door, you closed it and said NO. If you had kept that opportunity in your head and saw a way to utilise it, that had not been seen or thought of before.

You could have made a diference to your customers and YOUR LIFE.

So next time opportunity comes a knockin, don't slam the door shut, leave it ajar, cos it's easier and quicker to open it again that way.

"STARTING"

Starting,
this piece was inspired by a video podcast by zig ziglar and in it he finishes with the words
"you don't have to be great to start, but you gotta start to be great"

it also reminds me of the words of Mike Litman " you don't have to get it right, just get it started"

now how many of us have used trivial and downright useless excuses to put off starting something. washing the car,starting a savings plan, a pension fund,go to an event, return that call, even going to work on certain days.

how many times did you put off starting your own home based business, before you started. hopfully not too many times.

but now lets talk about this from a frustration level, that effects you as you grow your business. you have a great business and you share it with the world. but you are sharing it with people who love to give you excuses. "oh i am on board, as soon as the kids get out of school, oh as soon as little jonnie/mary is back from summer camp and we have had our family holidays, i am in."
and then comes the killer " oh dang school has just started, i am with you on the first school vacation".

well here is the news, they ain't never coming on board and your frustration level is going up. folks if they ain't prepared to start, they ain't never gonna start. sometimes you gotta wake up and smell the roses and some of the manure the helps the roses to grow.

they may be your friends and you may love them very dearly, but when it comes to them joining you and starting in the business, its not gonna happen. you just gotta let them go as regards business, but still love them like your little brother/sister.

instead you should be focusing on the people who are starters. the ones who get things done. the ones who seem to be busy,busy,busy. these people get things done and you have to shift your minset to partnering up with these people.

as my mentor john di lemme says "busy people get things done"
so reduce your stress levels and stop waitng on the folks whose motto is " oh as soon....... I am gonna....."

and start looking for people who are STARTERS

LEADERSHIP

Leadership.

probably one of the most talked about topics in these seas of financial cross currents. last week in the FT there was a piece by stefan stern. he talked about lunching with a current captain of industry who was talking about leadership and said he would share some of the leadership training he had undergone in 1955 whilst in the army.

as a busy and successful person he promptly delivered the notes to mr.stern who kindly shared them with his readers and i too would like to share some of the highlights of this piece as how they relate to you and the building of your successful home based business.

because if you are not a leader or worse the wrong type of leader, success will be hard to attain.
so lets begin with some of the notes.
"leadership is the art of influencing a body of people to follow a certain course of action"

"the leader must know and understand his men and treat them as human beings"

"the leader must have his heart in his job and be cheerful and enthusiastic even when conditions are difficult and the task unpleasent"

"the leader must be loyal to both his superiors and to his men. he/she must inspire loyalty"

he also shared some notes on man management and for 1955, they are ahead of the curve.

"the business of man management takes time and it requires the taking of infinite trouble.... you cannot deal with material you know little or nothing about. your people are your material;you must know all about them.....you must give each one individual study and be prepared to make an individual approach to each. you must be something of a psychologist.
getting relationships right with teammembers will require a leader to, among other things, put their interests before your own, be their champion,but also their chief critic.................. be yourself and don't act a part."

it concludes by asking "do all this and you will be a good leader? and the notes finish by saying "NO you will always have something more to learn........... so be prepared to profit by experience.

now even though these notes came from a training in leadership taken way back in 1955, they still hold true today. in fact more so. people everywhere are searching for leaders. searching for someone to lead them out of this tidal wave after tidal wave of financial mess. someone who will champion them and take the time to get to know them and show them what is possible.

so maybe you can tick all the boxes of a leader. if you can, are you leading or have you forgetten to continue your learning. well you and only you know the answer.

so i wish you success on your journey to be a LEADER OF CHAMPIONS.

SELF BELIEF

this is something i have touched on before. but recently while reading " how to get rich" by felix dennis one of the wealthiest publisher around this topic cropped up again. felix is someone who started out as a hippie and answering phones for richard branson, but is now someone who is highly successful worth between $400 to $900 million dollars. so if felix dennis states that one of the foundations of success is self belief, then it is time to visit this subject again.

"without self-belief nothing can be accomplished. with it nothing is impossible"

self-belief is the body armour we need to acquire to ward off the evils of fear,self-doubt and procrastination. if you don't believe in yourself, then who else will. people know when talking about your business, product or service whether you believe in it or not.

some of you may disagree,but believe me, people know. they can smell the fear,doubt and indecision. so you must with all the energy and from the depths of strength inside of you, bring up the belief that what you have is something that people need. if you go out begging for business, cos your rent is due,people know something is up.

but if you go out into the fray with the mindset and belief that " i have what you need" as opposed to "pretty please,please buy something" and that armour of self-belief comes shining through. well just watch how different the results will be.

next time,notice how people react to you, how they talk to you. most importantly how the listen to you when you are wearing the shining armour of self-belief. the difference is huge, i would go as far as saying its GINORMOUS

so i will leave the last words to felix dennis himself

WHAT IF..........WHAT WOULD YOU

this piece is very very personal. during the week i got an eye injury doing some basic gardening.it happened weds afternoon,by thursday morning my eye was in agony and would barely open. so at 7.20 am i was in the hospitals A&E. was seen to promptly and by a very competent doctor. prognosis i had an abraison on my corneia. i had to apply medication and cover up my eye for 36 hrs. only by saturday morning was i able to open the eye 70% and today 90%.

those 36hrs were hell. could'nt look at computer screen for more than 5 minutes. could'nt stand the glare from tv. reading for any length of time was a struggle. could'nt drive,no depth perception. so in reality could'nt continue building my home based business.

now today i have cracked on. but to get back to the title what if something happened to stop you earning what would you do. really what i am trying to get at is, are we reallly building our business at a fast rate so we can succeed or just tagging along. zig ziglzr in his podcast gives a great teaching about the last work day before our holidays and how much we achieve compared to normal.

he recomends that we should work all the time as if its our last day before our holidays, cos we will achieve so much more. this little non-serious injury has certainly given me the desired kick in the pants. its made me realise that although in my own mind things are going well, in reality not so and i need to buck up my ideas.

so from deep in my heart i say to you work at your business every day as if it was the last day you had to produce the monies necessary to secure your families future. work your business as if tomorrow it could all end. work your business with such an urgency that people ask you "whats up,the world coming to an end.

i urge you,do not delay in putting the urgency back into your efforts, because when you are on fire, people will come from miles around just to see you burn. now that is attraction marketing.

" BEHIND THE SCENES "

this blog was inspired by a small piece in last weeks sunday times called "10,000 hours of practice makes perfect"
the chambers concise dictionary describes, behind the scenes as ( at the back of the visible stage ,away from the public view )

i wrote down that quote from my mentor john di lemme a couple of years ago and kept in front of me as i studied techniques and stategies to grow my business and as i read books and listen to and watched material to assist me in my growth. now here we are a couple of years forward and an article appears describing how successful people on average put in 10,000 hours of practice behind the scenes before the start appearing in public and claim their achievements due to them for sticking the course.

this little piece from the times is based on the new book by malcolm gladwell called "Outliers : the story of success" i don't own it yet,but soon will and i do have "the tipping point" in my success library. the premise behind the book is that it takes about 10,000 hrs behind the scenes honing your skills to become successful.

now my mentor recomends that one spends on average 1/10 of your day about 2.4 hrs a day on personal development. but 10,000 hrs is roughly 3 hrs a day for just under 10 years. now those of you in the home based business may be saying but,but, my age is against me,time is against me, yada yadayada.....

well it can be done it just depends how big is your desire to be successful,to be secure money wise and do you truly desire to leave a legacy for your children and granchildren. are you prepared to work behind the scenes to develop and hone the skills necessary to get there. instead of watching the mindless soaps on tv for one or two hours, why not read a personal development book,watch a dvd on how to hone your sales skills,listen to an authority on sales copy so that your message reaches your target market.
do you need to hone your skills on internet marketing, you ain't gonna hone that skill listening to talk shows on the radio. how is your presentation skills, sharp, ok or blunt. now you ain't gotta worry about what your negative friends or family gonnna say, cos you are doing all this behind the scenes,away from public view.

and when you have those skills you need honed down to a fine art,watch out world. here you come to claim your success. yes your success, because you paid the price behind the scenes.
now gladwell says that you can't make it alone that you need, a work ethic and a strong support base (mastermind team).

Sharing.
in the description of this blog i mention how the great jim rohn says we should share freely all that we learn with others. that means not holding and hoarding onto things but to share out all of our learning to others without thinking about it. cos sharing leads to sharing by others with you.

the reason this topic is here today, is because as i went about my week, i noticed that i was sharing. sharing resources and learnings with others. and it was a natural part of the way i live my life. will admit having being in the corporate rat race it was not something i did naturally. but as i am out of that game and learning that investing in one's self is one of the most important things you can do, sharing what i have learned is now just an extension of myself.

i first read that statement by jim rohn in a book almost four years ago. and it was always in my mind. i re-read that book at the beginging of the year and highlighted that sentence, because i felt it was important. and when i first started blogging back in may, i retrived that statement and put it into what my blog was about.

last sunday i bumped into an old friend from my corporate rat race days. he has just moved back home after 20 years away. i myself moved back home after 16 years away. and as we chattted and caught up, i offered of my freewill all my contacts so that he and his family could adjust in as quickly as possible. at the time i did not realise this.

twice on wedsenday as i was chatting with two business friends and just the way the conversation was going, i shared some things i had learned which had helped me greatly in business. just shared them freely without any second thoughts. when i got in the car after the second chat, it struck me what i had just done. without me thinking about it i had changed.

so if one of the great and inspirational people of our time jim rohn says we should share our learning, it asks the question. do you share?
or do you hold back, thinking they screwed two years ago, i ain't gonna share. do you think by sharing learnings people will get ahead of you.( classic rat race think )
or do you think, well if i share this what am i gonna get in return
i shared this with him/her it saved their neck five years ago and zip,da nada not a thing shared back.

well my friend you have to lose that way of thinking. cos most of the time the people who share learnings with you are people you don't know that well. but because you have shared freely it will come back to you. as mentioned earlier coming from the corporate rat race background,where holding onto info so that you survive and someone falls is an addiction.

and like any addiction it takes time to wean yourself from this mentality. but over time you hoard less and less and start sharing, very slowly at first. dare i say even small things seem hard, but you adjust and your mindset adjusts. and when you come to the realisation that occured with me during the week. the feeling inside is well just a nice warm glow.

now as my way of saying thank you for reading, please allow me to share with you one of the items i shared with one of my business friends this week. the conversation was centred around growing ones business and how do you know you have had a productive week. so now let me share something i read around 5 years ago and it stuck with me and is something i utilise still today. it came from a book called "how to become a rainmaker" by jeffrey j fox.

there are four steps to every sale
1. getting a lead,a refferal, an introduction to a decision maker
2.getting an appointment to meet the decision maker
3.meeting the decision maker face to face
4.getting a commitment to purchase your product/service

assign one point to step one. two points to step two. three points to step three and four points to step four.
work every day to get a total of four points. this can be in any combination. 4 refferals, 2 appintments, one face to face plus one refferal or one purchase/sale.
next on your diary page write "Get Four Points"
record your points dilligently. don't try to do it on the last day of the week.
if you tally four points per day, you will never run out of prospects, your pipeline will always be full and you won't have slow periods. at the end of the working week your point tally should be 20.
try this system out diligently for the next 30 days and let me know how you get on.

FOCUS PART 2

yesterday in the money section of the weekend edition of the ft there is a Q & A with donald trump on wealth. for the question "what is the secret of your success" he gives two.
one is a piece of advice is father gave him "get in,get it done,get it done right and get out". talk about being effective and efficent.

but the second part of this answer was very illuminating. he said that he had learned to focus.
during his financial difficulties in the 90's he said he lost focus. and that by regaining his focus and focusing on the right thing,
the solution, he was able to turn things around and is now more successful than ever.

so if the great donald trump can admit that he alone was responsible for his mistakes and only he could regain his focus, what about the rest of us.

the only person who is responsible for the success or failure of your business is you. to succeed, you must focus. focus on the solution not the problem.

so if you have no team, whats the solution you need to focus on. got no sales, whats the solution,where do you need to focus. last week we had bill gates and warren buffet say focus was the number one key to success. this week its donald trump who is saying that focus is the key.

now whether or not you like or dislike these people, they are succesful. and as someone once said,
"success leaves footprints,just follow them"

what are you focusing on the problem or the solution. this week i had a business owner partner up with my business and the words he spoke where like an electric charge to me.
he said "colin, i ain't going down,i'm not taking this doom and gloom, i am not going down"

do you believe that if you were so focused in these times of doom ridden messages and had the conviction of and attitude of NOT GOING DOWN
how do you think you would do.
i believe that if you decide today to truly FOCUS on the solutions, you will succeed.

yesterday in an e mail letter from Stephen Pierce, his theme was also focus.
he was taking about russell simmonds, multi multi millionaire and how when he started Phat Farm fashions, he was $1,000,000 in the hole after six months. two years later his partner pulled out, so russell was on his own.

but he stayed focused, the business grew to $300.000.000 turnover and he got an offer for the business,that meant he pocketed $125,000,000 and still kept control of company. man is that focus or is that focus. he stayed focused, kept checking the path he was on was the right one and stuck with it, all the way through to the very successful conclusion.

so for the sake of your business and the dreams you have for your family
STAY FOCUSED

last weekend in the FT they published an extract from the new authorised biography of Warren Buffet. and in there was a piece about the first time buffet and bill gates first met. the piece rambled for a bit, then came the last three sentences.

at the dinner table bill gates snr asked the people there what was the number one trait in being successful and almost at once both gates and buffet shouted out "FOCUS".

if two of the worlds most successful business people regard focus as being the major key to success, then the question is, how focused are you at attaining success for your home based business.

do you have an ability to laser in on what needs to be done or do you get distracted easily. if you know what area you need to improve on do you focus in on that. what is it exactly that you need to focus in on. is it to communicate better, generate more leads, improve your conversion rate, personal development, showing the plan daily/weekly.

do you need to prospect, do you need to improve your telephone skills, internet marketing,sales copy, presentations,public speaking,networking and the list could go on for ever. but deep down you know exactly it is that you need to focus on to succeed.

so ask yourself and answer truthfully. whatever the asnwer is then that is what you need to focus on daily and in a diligent and purposeful manner. its no good focusing for one day and then getting sidetracked.

you will have to become relentless in your ability to focus in on that one area which if conquered, will lead to success. your drive to focus will pay its divedends, but the focus must be laser like. you cannot allow distractions to get in the way. you are going to have to look at where your time is allocated at the moment and be prepared to get rid of some thngs, so that you can focus, focus clearly on what it is you need to do.

if warren buffett and bill gates were at my dinner table and both shouted out FOCUS , my attention would be laser like to the conversation that followed. so if focus is good enough for warren buffett and bill gates then its certainly good enough for me.

" 3 WORDS "

3 Words,

yes just 3 words can make the difference in your business, surviving,failing and skyrocketing. a couple of weeks ago i purchased the new book "YES ! 50 secrets from the science of persusasion", written by Robert B. Cialdini and two others and just the first chapter made me take stock.

in chapter one they talk of a lady called Colleen Scot, one of the biggest and best writers in paid programming/infomercials. she took the brave decision to change three words that all presenters use at the end as a call to action and guess what happened? it exploded and all it took was 3 words.

i better share with you those 3 words. instead of the usual " operators are waiting,please call now" she changed it to " if operators are busy, please call again". 3 words is all it took to explode the orders for that product.

my mentor john di lemme says " the words you use will create your results". so the question to ask yourself is are the words you currently use exploding your business or not. what do the words you use say about you. that is you the brand/person.

are you polite to all the people you meet on a daily basis. do you say please, thank you, you are welcome. or do you just grunt and use facial expressions to get you through the day.
people loved to be thanked, it is probably one of the most powerful things you can do everyday.
most of the people you come in contact me on a daily basis are never thanked or recognised, so why not stand out. become remembered as the person who says "thank you".

when talking to someone and you know their name, do you use it? a persons name is one of the most precious things they own and when you use it, you go up in their estimation. you will be remembered as the person who knows their name and you know what they could be the key to unlocking your financial future. how about it, peter/mary thank you. peter/mary please could you. or if you do something for them and they thank you why not say "peter/mary you are welcome. try it and watch the difference in your life.

if you are in mlm/networkmarketing and really want to see the power of words. just try these 4
" I BELIEVE IN YOU"
how many times have you told someone who joined your business, " i believe in you"
i bet you that most people who join you and are still in the work environment will have never ever being told by their boss or co-workers " i believe in you"

if changing 3 words could explode collen scott's infomercial, why not take up the challenge of changing some of the words you use on a different day. i believe and know that it does make a difference in how you approch the day and how it approachs you. go on, take up the challenge,
